Milford Sound Driving Tour: The Journey to Piopiotahi

On this driving tour through Fiordland National Park, you’ll discover that the journey to Piopiotahi is every bit as extraordinary as the destination. As you travel the Milford Road, you’ll explore the stories, wildlife, geology and remarkable people that have shaped this remote corner of Aotearoa.

The tour starts at the Alpine Centre Café & Bar in Te Anau, the last town before the road disappears into Fiordland’s vast wilderness. From there, you’ll travel through the Eglinton Valley, past ancient beech forests, mirror-like lakes and dramatic alpine valleys. You’ll cross the Divide, travel through the remarkable Homer Tunnel and descend into the spectacular Cleddau Valley before arriving at Piopiotahi - Milford Sound.

Along the way, you’ll hear stories of Ngāi Tahu, early explorers and hardy pioneers, as well as the people who built a road through one of New Zealand’s most formidable mountain landscapes. You’ll also discover Fiordland’s unique wildlife and learn how conservation efforts have helped protect some of Aotearoa’s rarest species.

During this 120-minute tour, you’ll have a chance to:
