Tampa Riverwalk Audio Tour: Sparkman Wharf to Curtis Hixon Park
About the Tour
Tampa’s waterfront tells a story of soldiers, cigar makers, pirates, and bold reinvention.
On this walking tour, you’ll discover how this former military shipping hub transformed into a vibrant destination – while keeping the immigrant traditions, mob legends, and maritime history that shaped Florida’s Gulf Coast alive.
The tour starts at Sparkman Wharf, where soldiers once boarded ships bound for Europe during World War I, and cargo vessels moved cigars, citrus, and cattle through Tampa Bay. You’ll stroll along the Tampa Riverwalk, past monuments honoring Vicente Martinez-Ybor, the Spanish entrepreneur who turned Tampa into the cigar capital of the world. I’ll also share stories of mob bosses controlling gambling operations from Ybor City, and you’ll discover how Cuban, Spanish, and Italian immigrants built Ybor City’s thriving culture in the late 1800s
The tour ends at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, where festivals, concerts, and cultural institutions make this downtown’s vibrant heart.
On this 60-minute tour, you’ll have a chance to:
- Explore the Henry B. Plant Museum inside the 1891 Tampa Bay Hotel, a Moorish Revival palace where Theodore Roosevelt planned Cuban operations
- Learn about the Seminoles, the only Native tribe that never signed a surrender, who fought three wars in Florida’s swamps
- Discover Tampa Theatre, a 1926 movie palace with a working 12,000-pipe Wurlitzer organ accompanying silent films
- Taste authentic Cuban sandwiches and sangria at Columbia Café, an outpost of Florida’s oldest continuously operating restaurant
- Hear about why 700 business elites storm the city each year aboard a pirate ship for Gasparilla, Tampa’s wildest tradition
- Pass Davis Islands, where Tom Brady lived in Derek Jeter’s $22 million mansion on Tampa’s most exclusive waterfront
- Find out about mob boss Santo Trafficante Jr., who controlled Tampa’s gambling, bolita operations, and Cuban casinos
By the end of this tour, you’ll understand how this Gulf Coast city blends maritime grit with Latin flavor, creating one of Florida’s most distinctive urban experiences.
