The City That Sang Itself Free: A Tallinn Walking Tour
About the Tour
Tallinn's Old Town is one of Europe's most intact medieval cities, and its 800-year story reads like a compressed history of the continent. On this walking tour, you'll trace how Danish crusaders, Hanseatic merchants, and Soviet-era singers each left their mark on a city that's now one of the world's most digitally advanced capitals.
The tour starts at the Viru Gate, one of the most recognizable entrances to the Old Town. From there, you'll walk Muurivahe Street alongside the medieval defensive walls, slip through the atmospheric St. Catherine's Passage – where 14th-century tombstones line original monastery walls – and cross Town Hall Square, home to the oldest Gothic town hall in Northern Europe. You'll then climb to Toompea, the upper town where nobles, knights, and bishops once ruled over the merchants below.
On Toompea, you'll stand before the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, whose deliberately imposing Russian Revival domes once symbolized imperial dominance and now reflect Estonia's complicated relationship with its own history. The tour takes in the Patkuli and Kohtuotsa viewing platforms, where Tallinn's medieval rooftops and Baltic harbor spread out below, before descending past the Kiek in de Kök tower and arriving at Freedom Square. The tour ends at the Tallinn Tourism Information Center, near the Town Hall Square.
On this 75-minute tour, you'll have a chance to:
- Hear the legend of Linda and Kalev, whose mythical story gives Toompea hill its ancient name
- Visit the Town Hall Pharmacy, one of Europe's oldest continuously operating pharmacies, run by the same family for nearly 300 years
- Learn how marzipan began as medicine at Café Maiasmokk, where artists still hand-paint the figures today
- Explore the Church of the Holy Spirit, whose clock supposedly struck 13 times to save Tallinn from a devastating fire
- Discover how Estonia's Singing Revolution replaced weapons with song to peacefully restore independence in 1991
- Visit Niguliste Museum, a 13th-century church gutted by WWII bombs and reborn as a celebrated medieval art museum and concert hall
Tallinn rewards curious walkers, and this tour gives you the stories behind the stones.

Hi, I’m Agnieska – your friendly voice behind the tours! I’ve been guiding travelers since 2009 with my company GuideInVilnius, creating personal, story-rich experiences across Lithuania, the Baltic States, and even Sydney.
By education I’m a psychologist with a Master’s degree, currently studying psychotherapy and running a private practice. This means I don’t just show places – I help you feel them, understand people, culture, and the little details that make each destination unique.
I’m also a big traveler myself. I explore countries through their history, culture, food, and art – and I bring all of that into my audio tours of my home country and the places I love.
As my guests say: “Agnieska is exactly the type of private guide travelers pray for – very personal and professional, yet fun and flexible.”
And that’s exactly what you get with me. Ready to explore together?
