About the Tour

Svolvær is an artist’s paradise, known for its vibrant summers. On this walking tour through the heart of this small town in Norway’s Lofoten archipelago, you’ll find out that its history is just as magnificent as its scenery!

The tour starts on the main square, between Torget street and the harbor, where you’ll take a leisurely stroll through the city center. You’ll cross the bridge to the historical Svinøya island where you’ll have captivating views of Svolvær. I’ll tell you some exciting stories that have shaped the town, including the tale of the 1941 Lofoten Raid, when British and Norwegian soldiers carried out a daring and heroic attack on German forces occupying the area.

Svolvær has long been a place of inspiration for artists, and no one has captured the dramatic Lofoten light better than local painter Gunnar Berg. Its art scene is still very much alive, and I’ll show you several galleries and sculptures scattered around its streets. Before the tour ends in front of the Fiskerkona monument, you’ll see Jeppe Hein’s ‘Eye of the North,’ a fascinating monument that symbolizes both the power of nature and human endurance.

On this 45-minute tour, you can look forward to:

  • Seeing Kjeøya kystbatteri (Kjeøya Coastal Battery), an old German military facility dating back to World War II
  • Taking in Svolvær Church which was built by the residents themselves, stone by stone
  • Strolling past the Lofoten War Memorial Museum, home to one of the world’s largest collections of uniforms and smaller artifacts from the Second World War
  • Looking around one of the places in town where Gunnar Berg drew inspiration for his iconic depictions of tough fishermen and stormy seas
  • Glimpsing the iconic Fiskehjeller, where Lofoten’s “gold” (codfish) is left to dry
  • Finding out about Norway’s biggest fishing boom where thousands of fishermen would descend on Svolvær every winter to participate in the legendary Lofoten fishing season

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a local looking to learn more, I promise a tour full of memorable moments. You’ll enjoy the views, take pictures, and maybe even be tempted to taste some local delicacies along the way.

So, come along on this unforgettable journey through the history, culture, and soul of Svolvær – I can’t wait to show you the city!

In the northern reaches of Europe, amidst the crisp air and breathtaking landscapes, resides an Arctic storyteller whose words weave magic into the frozen silence. Meet Lars Engerengen, a passionate narrator of the Arctic wilderness, a voice that carries the echoes of history and the whispers of untamed nature.

Living beneath the shimmering Northern Lights and the endless glow of the Midnight Sun, Lars discovered his fascination for the Arctic’s lore in childhood. Nights spent listening to age-old tales by the fireside sparked a curiosity that would shape his life’s journey. That spark grew into a flame as he ventured across icy tundras, sailed through fjords, and trekked along snow-laden paths, collecting stories etched into the land and its people.

His storytelling is more than words—it is an immersive experience. With a voice that soothes and inspires, Lars transports listeners to remote landscapes where ancient myths meet modern realities. Through his narratives, one feels the biting wind, hears the crunch of snow underfoot, and senses the resilience of those who carved out life in this harsh yet beautiful region.

Lars doesn't tell you everything, but he tells you enough to pique your curiosity. Enough to make you want to learn more. Enough to make you want to stay a while longer.

Join Lars on a journey beyond the ordinary—a voyage into the soul of the Arctic. Each tale is an invitation to explore a world where nature reigns supreme, and history lingers in every frozen breath. Step into the story, and let the Arctic speak through him.

Tips

Places to stop along the way

There are kiosks, cafes and restaurants all around the tour, so it is possible to buy something to eat if you want. In addition, it is possible to take breaks by visiting e.g. Lofoten War Memorial Museum and the tour goes through a park by the church, where it is nice to relax.

The last part of the tour goes along a quieter area on Svinøya, where you can enjoy nature and also take a break here and there, if you feel like it.

Best time of day

All day - all year. However, if the weather is stormy, please be careful, especially on the last part of the tour. In stormy weather it will be dangerous to walk on the pier where this tour ends.

If I should recommend a time of day....do it late at night, if it is possible to see the Midnite Sun.

Precautions

This tour is not complicated and can be used by everyone. In the summer there are many tourists in Lofoten, so be aware of possible pickpockets. Also be careful if you do the tour in bad weather. Stormy weather is challenging, especially in the last part of the tour. In case of storm, do not go to the pier where this tour ends,
