From First Flight to Fine Art: St. Petersburg, Florida Walking Tour
About the Tour
St. Petersburg, Florida has been reinventing itself since a Russian immigrant named its streets after his homeland in 1889. On this walking tour, you'll trace the city's transformation from a quiet railroad town into a cultural destination, following a waterfront that locals fought to keep public for over a century. You'll also hear how this shoreline quietly launched two of the most transformative industries in modern history: commercial aviation and Major League Baseball spring training.
The tour starts at the St. Pete Pier, a 26-acre waterfront park that replaced the beloved Inverted Pyramid structure in 2020 after nearly two decades of public debate. From there, you'll follow the bay south past Benoist Centennial Plaza, where pilot Tony Jannus took off on January 1st, 1914 – carrying St. Petersburg's mayor on the world's first scheduled commercial airline flight. You'll stroll along North Straub Park, pass century-old banyan trees, and explore the elegantly restored Vinoy Resort & Golf Club, a Mediterranean Revival landmark that housed military trainees during World War II before nearly falling to the wrecking ball in the 1970s.
The route continues south along Beach Drive, past the Museum of Fine Arts and the St. Petersburg Yacht Club, before ending at the Salvador Dalí Museum, whose hurricane-engineered glass structure houses the largest collection of Dalí's work outside Spain. Inside, a DNA-shaped spiral staircase pulls you upward into galleries donated by private collectors Reynolds and Eleanor Morse, with an AI installation that brings the surrealist master back to life in the gift shop – no admission required.
On this 60-minute tour, you'll have a chance to:
- Explore the Vinoy's lobby, featuring mosaic tile floors and Dale Chihuly's Luna glass chandelier
- Learn how Babe Ruth's spring training visits helped transform St. Pete into a national destination
- Visit Pioneer Park's stone obelisk, engraved with the names of the city's 600 earliest settlers
- Discover Demens Landing, where a Russian immigrant's railroad pier directly gave the city its name
- See Al Lang Stadium, where Major League Baseball's spring training history began in the early 1900s
- Hear how the Mahaffey Theatre's 23-foot glowing lunar installation became one of downtown's most unexpected art experiences
St. Petersburg rewards curiosity at every corner – lace up your walking shoes and let the waterfront do the rest.

STARTING POINT
Address: St. Pete Pier Fishing Deck
Your tour begins at the fishing deck located at the end of the St. Pete Pier—not at the main entrance.
Insider tip: the pier itself is about a ½ mile walk each way. Save your energy for the actual tour experience and hop aboard the free Pier tram instead.
