Sherborne Ghost Walk: A Terrifying Tour of Dorset’s Oldest Town
About the Tour
Sherborne is a town where there’s history in every ancient stone and lingering shadow. On this atmospheric walking tour, you’ll discover the supernatural side of this historic Dorset market town, exploring its haunted buildings, eerie alleyways, and the spectral residents who’ve refused to depart. From monks who still walk the cloisters, to the Blue Lady who glides up the grand staircase, you’ll hear chilling tales that span over a thousand years.
This tour starts at the magnificent Sherborne Abbey, whose 1,300-year-old walls have heard countless prayers and may still harbor a few restless souls. You’ll weave through the narrow streets of the town center, passing the old Bridewell prison, historic coaching inns, and the elegant Sherborne House with its famous blue-tinted apparition. Along the way, you’ll hear about phantom monks, Victorian ladies who haunt quiet lanes, and the ghostly pot-boy who appears on the first Friday of every month.
You’ll explore hidden tunnels, ancient almshouses, and even an old laundry home where a young girl’s ghost still moves around on the original floor level. The tour ends at The Conduit, a historic house in the heart of town where local legends tell of executions and rebellion.
During this 60-minute ghost walk, you’ll also have a chance to:
- Find out about Sir Walter Raleigh’s headless ghost, said to return to the grounds of Sherborne Castle each Michaelmas Eve
- Explore Finger Lane, where a Victorian woman’s spirit has terrified late-night passersby
- See the old Digby Hotel, now a school boarding house, where strange occurrences began the moment students moved in
- Learn about the tragic tale of murder and revenge connected to The Angel and Antelope Inns
- Hear the story of the White Hart’s kitchen, where pots shift and doors open by themselves
- Glimpse the mysterious “Man in Black” who’s been spotted in shop doorways along Cheap Street
- Step inside St. John’s Almshouse, where an entire congregation once witnessed a shadowy figure at the altar
Take a walk on Sherborne’s spectral side and discover why this beautiful town has earned its reputation as one of Dorset’s most haunted locations.
