Castles, Coal and Canals: A Driving Tour of Hainaut, Belgium
About the Tour
Hainaut is a province where history rises around you in stone, steel, and water.
On this driving tour, you’ll trace the region’s transformation from medieval battleground, to aristocratic showcase, to industrial powerhouse. Along the way, you’ll discover how castles, coal mines, and canals shaped one of Belgium’s most layered landscapes.
The tour starts at Château de Seneffe, an estate built in the 1700s by a wealthy merchant who turned military contracts into architectural ambition. You’ll wind through the countryside past Château de Feluy, a privately owned medieval fortress whose four round towers reflect perfectly in a still moat.
You’ll make your way to the elegant Château d’Attre, an inhabited 18th-century residence where original furniture, family portraits, and leather-bound books remain exactly where their owners left them. From there, you’ll visit the hauntingly beautiful ruins of Château d’Havré, rescued from oblivion by local volunteers. The tour ends at the Strépy-Thieu Boat Lift – a 100-metre concrete tower that raises fully loaded barges 73 metres between canal levels.
On this 90-minute driving tour, you’ll have a chance to:
- Explore the hilltop stronghold of Écaussinnes-Lalaing, with its dungeon, Gothic chapel, and fireplace large enough to cook for an army
- Wander Château d’Attre’s English landscape garden, complete with an artificial rocky hill and a Swiss chalet built purely for pleasure
- Discover how Château d’Havré’s volunteer-led rose garden blooms each June with rare historic varieties
- Learn how Belgium became the first industrialised country on the European continent, second only to Britain in 19th-century output
- Understand Belgium’s linguistic divide – and why the same towns carry entirely different names in French and Dutch
- Visit the historic Canal du Centre, once carrying millions of tonnes of Hainaut coal northward to Antwerp and beyond
Pack your curiosity and a good appetite – the Grand Place Écaussinnes has a welcoming taverne serving local produce. This tour richly rewards those who take their time.

Denzil Walton
Hi, I’m Denzil. For nearly four decades, I’ve been discovering Belgium not as a checklist of famous sights, but as a collection of stories waiting to be noticed.
Belgium is full of places that people walk, cycle, or drive past without ever realising what happened there.
I love uncovering those overlooked stories and sharing them through my blog, Discovering Belgium, and now through VoiceMap tours. These stories range from castles that changed hands in European power struggles, to landscapes shaped by industry, to towns where language and history quietly collide — and the people who shaped them.
My tours are not lists of landmarks. They are journeys through the layers of a place.
As we travel together, I’ll help you notice what others miss — the hidden stories behind elegant façades, the industrial scars beneath peaceful countryside, and the lives that shaped the Belgium you see today.
If you’re curious about what lies beyond the guidebook highlights — and beyond the familiar clichés of beer and chocolate — you’re in the right place.
Because Belgium’s most fascinating stories aren’t always obvious.
But once you discover them, you’ll never see the country in quite the same way again.
