About the Tour

Segovia's remarkable skyline, dominated by its iconic Roman aqueduct, medieval cathedral, and fairy-tale alcázar, tells a story of three civilizations that shaped this UNESCO World Heritage site. On this walking tour, you'll discover how Romans, Moors, and Christians left their mark on this ancient city perched high on a rocky hill, creating a unique blend of architecture and culture that has endured for centuries.

The tour begins at Plaza del Azoguejo beneath the monumental Roman aqueduct, an engineering marvel built in the 2nd century without mortar or concrete—just 20,400 granite stones held together by gravity alone. You'll stroll up Calle Real, admiring the distinctive sgraffito decorations that adorn building façades, a testament to the Mudéjar influence that blended Moorish and European styles during medieval times. Along the way, you'll explore the former Jewish Quarter, once home to a thriving Sephardic community until historical tensions changed the city's cultural landscape.

Your journey continues through the breathtaking Plaza Mayor, dominated by the magnificent Gothic cathedral known as the Dame of Cathedrals, and into the ancient canonry quarter, one of the oldest Romanesque civil districts in the world. You'll discover the stories behind the medieval printing house where Spain's first book was printed in 1472, and enjoy spectacular views of the Eresma Valley with its monasteries and historic buildings. The tour ends at the magnificent Alcázar, the fortress-palace that inspired Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle, where you'll learn how this structure evolved from a Roman fort to a royal residence and military academy.

On this 90-minute tour, you'll:

  • Walk beneath the impressive 2,000-year-old Roman aqueduct that stands 28 meters high and once delivered water to the city without pumps
  • Admire the distinctive sgraffito decorations on building façades, featuring over 600 different geometric and vegetal patterns
  • Visit Medina del Campo Square with its beautiful Romanesque Church of Saint Martin, featuring a typical Segovian gallery design
  • Explore the former Jewish Quarter and learn about the Main Synagogue that was converted to the Corpus Christi Church in the 15th century
  • Stand in Plaza Mayor where Queen Isabella the Catholic was crowned in 1474
  • Discover the ancient canonry quarter with its Romanesque houses where women were once forbidden to enter
  • Marvel at the spectacular views of the Eresma Valley with its medieval churches, convents and the Royal Mint Factory
  • Learn the fascinating history of the Alcázar, from medieval fortress to royal palace to artillery academy

Follow in the footsteps of queens, knights, and artisans through Segovia's winding medieval streets as you experience this remarkably preserved slice of Spanish history perched between two river valleys.

¡Hola! I am Begoña, an official local tour guide of Castille and Leon, in Spain, but I specialise in Segovia, the city, and the region of Segovia. My traveller spirit and profession pushed me to spend 10 years in different countries in Europe, but one day, I decided to come back to my roots in Segovia and to make my dream come true: becoming a tour guide and showing Segovia and its villages to visitors who want to learn about Spain and our history.
I speak Spanish, English, French and I can make myself understood in German.
