Behind Elegant Squares: True Crime in Santa Cruz de Tenerife
About the Tour
Santa Cruz de Tenerife's postcard-perfect squares conceal a history of murder, exile, and cover-ups rarely mentioned in the guidebooks. On this walking tour, you'll hear how a 1980s nightclub murder on Calle San José inspired Cruz de Navajas, one of Spain's biggest pop hits. From royal poisonings to a notorious Carnival-season manhunt, this walk gathers the true crime stories locals usually only whisper about.
The tour starts at Plaza de España, beside the city's giant letters and artificial lake, then heads up Calle San José, once home to four nightclubs and the bar where Mario worked before his fatal stabbing. You'll pass the Hotel Camacho, where an exiled African king died under suspicious circumstances, and the Masonic-symbol-covered façade of the Círculo de la Amistad XII de Enero.
Along Plaza del Príncipe, you'll learn why locals call themselves chicharreros, and how a stolen bronze fish once turned into a four-year criminal case. You'll stand across from the flat where a 1970 killing stunned the city, and hear how a serial killer's Carnival-season manhunt gripped Santa Cruz in 1991. The tour ends at the Puente Galcerán, overlooking the Santos ravine, where a guesthouse's hidden remains uncovered a seven-year mystery.
On this self-guided audio walk, you’ll have a chance to:
- Pass Calle Ruiz de Padrón, named after a priest whose 1813 speech helped get Spain's Inquisition abolished
- Spot the Egyptian-columned Masonic Temple on Calle San Lucas, shuttered and repurposed under Franco's regime
- Admire the Carrara marble fountain in Plaza Weyler, named after a general infamous for Cuba's concentration camps
- Hear how King Jaja of Opobo died in Santa Cruz, and where his body first rested
- Find out how a false 2003 rumor about Carnival violence spread citywide panic
- Learn about the Lorber Society, the obscure German sect behind a notorious 1970 family killing
By the time you reach the Puente Galcerán, you'll understand why Santa Cruz says its ravines never sleep.
Tour Producer
Jonathan Helenio is a local storyteller from Santa Cruz de Tenerife and a passionate lover of the Canary Islands, their history and their flavours.
In 2020 he founded Gut Good Bueno, a Tenerife company that designs cultural experiences with a story behind them: guided walking routes, excursions, talks and audio tours. Among them are the Charlas del Misterio, evening talks about the legends, crimes and enigmas of the islands, which draw a growing local audience.
As a tourism professional, he works with local guides, history communicators and businesses to create experiences that show visitors the other side of Tenerife, far from the clichés of sun and sand. He is also a great connoisseur of Canarian wine and its volcanic vineyards, a world he loves to share.
His approach is simple: every street, square and ravine has a story worth telling, and the best way to understand a place is to walk it while listening to someone who knows it. His tours combine careful research with the rhythm of a good conversation.

Directions to Starting Point
The tour starts at Plaza de España, next to the large “Santa Cruz” letters, in the heart of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
By tram: Take line 1 and get off at Fundación. It’s a 7-minute walk (about 500 m) to the letters.
By car: Park in the underground car park at Plaza de España, right under the square.
From the cruise terminal: It’s a flat 15-minute walk (about 1.1 km) along Avenida Marítima.
Tips
Places to stop along the way
Quick bite, Carnival style. Right on Plaza de la Candelaria you’ll find Mister Smile, the fast-food spot where Santa Cruz locals have always refuelled between dances at Carnival. Cheap, quick and full of memories.
Traditional Canarian meal. A short walk from the end of the tour, on Calle Clavel, La Hierbita is one of the city’s long-established restaurants. Generous portions of local home cooking.
Best time of day
The tour works all year round, as Santa Cruz has mild weather in every season. Mornings and late afternoons are the most pleasant, especially in summer, when the midday sun can be strong. On weekdays, Calle Castillo and the central squares are busier. On Sundays and public holidays the streets are quieter. During Carnival (February or March), parts of the route can be crowded or closed to traffic, so allow some extra time.
Precautions
This tour crosses several streets, so stay alert to traffic and only cross when the way is clear and at pedestrian crossings. Wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and in summer a hat or sunscreen. Use headphones at a volume that still lets you hear your surroundings. The route is flat and suitable for most walkers, with one stop where you’ll be invited to sit down on a bench. Stay aware of your belongings, as in any busy city centre.
