About the Tour

San Diego's Little Italy sells itself as a polished Instagram backdrop, but its streets hide a far grittier past. On this walking tour, you'll find out how a working-class fishing village survived internment orders, a freeway, and gentrification. You'll also hear how tuna fishermen and their families built the neighborhood's soul from scratch.

The tour starts beneath the Little Italy sign on India Street and winds past Filippi's Pizza Grotto, where a market still conceals an old-school dining room in back. You'll pass Piazza Basilone, dedicated to a WWII Medal of Honor recipient, before heading into the neighborhood's quieter residential streets, where Victorian cottages hint at the multi-generational households that once packed these blocks.

Along the way, you'll learn how wartime paranoia banned Italian fishermen from their own waterfront, and how a wrecking ball sliced the community in half to build Interstate 5. You'll stop at Amici Park's bocce courts and the relocated Amici House, once home to a fisherman known simply as The General. You'll also see Our Lady of the Rosary, funded nickel by nickel by tuna fishermen. The tour ends at the fountain in Piazza della Famiglia, a modern plaza built on the site of the old neighborhood's social life.

On this 45-minute tour, you'll have a chance to:

  • Peek inside the San Diego Firehouse Museum, built in 1915 to protect the wooden houses and canneries from fire
  • Spot Queenstown Public House, a New Zealand-themed pub hiding inside a preserved 1890s Craftsman home
  • Discover how Amadeo Giannini's loans to immigrant fishermen eventually grew into Bank of America
  • Learn how a Rooftop Cinema Club turned an unassuming building into a sunset movie destination
  • Hear how the Blessing of the Fleet procession once marched from church doors straight to the waterfront
  • Find out why a handful of stubborn families refused to abandon the neighborhood after the freeway's destruction

By the time you reach the fountain, you'll understand why Little Italy's charm runs far deeper than its pasta.

Directions to Starting Point

The tour begins at the famous Little Italy Street Sign located at 1731 India Street in San Diego. Street parking in Little Italy is famously competitive, so save yourself the headache and grab a spot in one of the paid lots, or take a ride-share. If you're using the San Diego Trolley, the County Center/Little Italy station (Green Line) drops you off just a short walk away. Make sure you're standing right at the Little Italy arch on the east side of India street before you hit play.

Tips

Places to stop along the way

Honestly, there are so many incredible restaurants packed into these blocks that it feels a little like cheating to only list a few. Part of the fun of Little Italy is just following your nose and discovering the spot you want to try! But if you need a few starting points: tackle a seafood tower at Ironside Fish & Oyster, load up on garlic and red wine at Buon Appetito, or grab a grass-fed burger in a historic 1890s home at Queenstown Public House. For unapologetic, old-school pizza parlor vibes, you have to duck into Filippi's. For a quick history break, step inside the magnificent Our Lady of the Rosary Church to see the ceiling murals, or pop into the San Diego Firehouse Museum. The tour ends at Piazza della Famiglia, which is the absolute best spot to grab an espresso and a fresh cannoli.

Best time of day

San Diego weather is almost perfect year-round, so there's no bad season for this walk. However, Little Italy turns into a bustling, elbow-to-elbow scene on Friday and Saturday nights. For the best listening experience, aim for late morning or early afternoon on a weekday. If you want to brave the crowds for some incredible local food, do the tour on a Wednesday or Saturday to catch the Little Italy Mercato Farmers' Market.

Precautions

You'll be navigating a busy, urban neighborhood, so please keep your head on a swivel at crosswalks—drivers aren't always paying attention to pedestrians! Sunblock, sunglasses, and a bottle of water are essential, even when it feels breezy by the bay. Most importantly, wear comfortable walking shoes; we're covering a good amount of ground on pavement and concrete.
