San Diego Bayfront Walking Tour: From Tall Ships to Seaport Village
About the Tour
San Diego owes its very existence to the deep, sheltered waters of its bay. On this walking tour, you'll see how San Diego grew from a tuna cannery port into a major naval hub. You'll also hear the stories behind its warships and memorials.
The tour starts at the Guardian of Water Fountain, beside the Art Deco San Diego County Administration Center dedicated by Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1938. From there, you'll head south along the Embarcadero, passing the Maritime Museum's tall ships, including the HMS Surprise and the world's oldest active sailing ship, the Star of India, before reaching the massive USS Midway aircraft carrier.
Along the way, you'll pause at bronze memorials honoring military families, the sailors of the doomed 'Taffy 3' naval battle, and the iconic Embracing Peace kissing statue. You'll wander through Seaport Village's cobblestone lanes before crossing into Embarcadero Marina Park, a man-made peninsula built from dredged bay sand. The tour ends here, with the Coronado Bridge and downtown San Diego's skyline framing the water.
On this 60-minute tour, you'll have a chance to:
- Spot the HMS Surprise, the tall ship Russell Crowe sailed in Master and Commander, docked at Discovery Pier
- Learn how the USS San Diego cruiser earned eighteen battle stars without losing a single sailor to enemy fire
- Watch shoppers weave past Seaport Village's antique 1895 carousel, hand-carved by Coney Island's original carousel maker
- Spot the bright red Fish Tree sculpture in Ruocco Park, one of the Embarcadero's quirky public art installations
- Learn why the Coronado Bridge's sweeping curve was engineered to let aircraft carriers pass safely beneath it
- Stroll past a marina of multi-million-dollar yachts, some with helipads and hot tubs, moored beside the park
- Listen for recordings of Bob Hope's wartime jokes at the memorial honoring his decades of USO performances
By the time you reach Embarcadero Marina Park, you'll understand exactly why San Diego's story is written into its bay.

Directions to Starting Point
When you tap the map button to navigate to our starting point, it will guide you to the beautiful "Guardian of Water" fountain, located right in front of the historic San Diego County Administration Center on North Harbor Drive. You will know you are in the exact right spot when you see the large stone sculpture of a woman carrying a water jug, surrounded by the expansive green lawns of Waterfront Park. If you are driving, there is convenient underground public parking located right beneath Waterfront Park, as well as metered street parking in the surrounding area. If you prefer public transit, the County Center/Little Italy Trolley Station is just a short walk away, making it incredibly easy to reach without a car.
Tips
Places to stop along the way
The USS Midway Museum: If you have an extra three or four hours, exploring the inside of this historic aircraft carrier is an unforgettable experience.
The Fish Market / Top of the Market: Located right on the water near the Midway, this is a local institution for incredibly fresh seafood and bay views.
Seaport Village: Our route takes you right through this area, but feel free to pause the tour to grab lunch, ride the historic 1895 carousel, or bravely sample something at the hot sauce shop.
The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park: As we walk past Embarcadero Marina Park, look for this stunning outdoor concert venue. If a symphony or band is doing a midday soundcheck, it is a brilliant spot to sit on the grass and enjoy free live music.
Best time of day
San Diego’s phenomenal weather means you can enjoy our tour comfortably year-round! However, to avoid the heaviest tourist crowds and the midday heat, we suggest starting either in the mid-morning (around 9:00 AM or 10:00 AM) or in the late afternoon (around 3:30 PM or 4:00 PM). A late afternoon start is especially spectacular, as you will catch the “golden hour” lighting on the bay and finish just in time to watch the sunset reflect off the downtown skyline. That said, this tour is just as beautiful in the evening watching the ships and skyline lit up.
Precautions
While the path is flat, paved, and incredibly accessible, you will be walking completely exposed to the Southern California sun for most of the route. We highly advise bringing sunglasses, a hat, and plenty of sunscreen, even on overcast days. Bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated, and make sure you are wearing comfortable walking shoes to handle the mix of concrete paths and the cobblestone walkways inside Seaport Village. Finally, the waterfront walkway is a shared, multi-use path—keep an eye out for passing cyclists, joggers, rollerbladers, and pedicabs as we stroll.
