Cycling the Bayshore Bikeway: A Coronado Tour
About the Tour
Discover the treasures of the Silver Strand State Beach, on a cycling tour along the 4.3-mile Bayshore Bikeway. Starting at the Coronado Boathouse, you’ll have the chance to soak up spectacular views while you travel along one of the best flat bike paths in Southern California, to the Loews Coronado Bay Resort. Along the way, you’ll hear about the area’s history, and the flora and fauna of San Diego Bay from the host of Netflix’s hit show, Tiny House Nation, John Weisbarth.
This tour, created by local environmental non-profit organization, Emerald Keepers, will help bring your inner marine scientist, conservationist, and historian to the surface. While you whizz past Glorietta Bay Park, Delta Beach, and Crown Cove, you can look forward to:
- Hearing about Tent City, a “city” made out of tents that would pop up between June and September from 1900 until 1939, set up by vacationers who couldn’t afford to stay at the Hotel Del Coronado
- Learning about amphibious warfare and “Naked Warriors” while taking in The First Ashore bronze statue by artist John Seward Johnson II
- Seeing Coronado’s Solstice Clock made out of stone benches, designed by the Schmidt Design Group, Inc
- Cycling past one of the most important nesting grounds for the endangered Least Tern, and hearing about other endangered species in the area
- Finding out about the Pacific Flyway which includes the most varied waterfowl habitats in North America
- Discovering how you too can protect the Eastern Pacific green sea turtles who call the San Diego Bay home
By the end of this cycle, you’ll have a greater appreciation for the environment around the bay. So join us and discover how you too can become an Emerald Keeper – one who cares for and protects the beach and ocean!
