Rome of the East: An Unforgettable Journey Through Samarkand
About the Tour
Welcome to Samarkand, the fabled “Rome of the East,” the dazzling crossroads of East and West, whose splendor once rivaled the greatest capitals.
On this walking tour, you’ll stand amongst turquoise domes that pierce the vast Central Asian sky, where the echoes of Silk Road caravans, conquering empires, and brilliant scholars still linger in the air.
The tour starts outside the Museum of Regional Studies. Your guide is Saodat: a passionate local historian and masterful storyteller who knows every corner of her beloved city by heart. She’ll share the city’s history along with her insights, bringing its ancient stones to life.
During this two-hour tour, you’ll also have a chance to:
- Admire Registan Square where intricate tilework and soaring portals shimmer in endless shades of blue and gold
- Discover how Samarkand became the cosmopolitan hub of the Silk Road
- Enter Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum, the timeless resting place of Timur (Tamerlane) and his heirs
- Climb the sacred stairway of Shah-i-Zinda, the “Living King” necropolis, an unforgettable avenue of brilliantly decorated mausoleums
- Walk through Alisher Navoi Central Park and along University Boulevard
- Find out how Timur’s ambition rebuilt a city into one of the most breathtaking capitals in history
Saodat doesn’t just list facts; she brings the past to life. By the end of the tour, you’ll have journeyed through 2,700 years of this dazzling city’s past and understand why, for millennia, travelers have left Samarkand utterly enchanted.

From dusk till dawn. Embark at dawn (8–9 AM) for serene streets and soft light that illuminates Gur-i Amir Mausoleum’s golden domes and Shahi-Zinda’s intricate tiles, perfect for photography. Attractions open by 8 AM, and early hours avoid midday heat and tourist crowds. Skip Fridays after noon due to mosque prayer gatherings. In some time of the year, there may be reconstructions in historical locations.
Precautions
