About the Tour

Have you ever wondered what the great Nathaniel Hawthorne would tell you about Salem? Hawthorne is well-known for his American gothic novels, in which he highlights his ties to the city of his birth. Hear all about his inspirations, thoughts, and musings on Old Salem on this walking tour.

Hawthorne’s shadow is an immersive, acted walking tour through Downtown Salem, told from the first-person perspective of Nathaniel Hawthorne himself, though you may meet a few other characters along the way...

This tour is meant to be taken at a meandering pace, and we encourage you to immerse yourself in the stories, and take pauses at the different locations where Mr. Hawthorne directs you. Please note that you must be close to the GPS points on the map for the next part of the story to play, and that the next track will not trigger unless the first has finished.

This tour was made possible by a grant from the Salem Cultural Council.
