About the Tour

Rovaniemi is the vibrant capital of Finnish Lapland, located just a stone’s throw from the Arctic Circle, and known as the official hometown of Santa Claus.

On this walking tour, you’ll learn about the war that almost ruined the city, take in some of its famous sights, and get to know how Rovaniemi became the capital of the north. I’ll share details about what makes it a magical, year-round destination. In winter it’s a frozen wonderland, perfect for witnessing the mesmerizing Northern Lights, and in summer the midnight sun offers endless daylight for outdoor adventures.

The tour starts alongside the Kemijoki River, from where you’ll cross Finland’s first cable-stayed bridge, Lumberjack’s Candle Bridge. You’ll pass by Culture House Korundi (home to an orchestra, museum, and contemporary art gallery) and Arktikum Museum, an Arctic research centre and one of Rovaniemi’s favorite cultural hubs.

Along the way, you’ll have a chance to:

  • Learn about the importance of the city’s river
  • Hear about the conflict between Finland, the Soviet Union, and Germany during World War II, and how Finland held multiple allegiances
  • Discover the Lapland Gold Rush’s history, when mining took off here in the 1870s
  • Experience local architecture by famed Finnish architect, Alvar Aalto, and hear how he helped redesign parts of the town that were destroyed in 1944
  • Stop by the Jäger Movement memorial, dedicated to Finnish volunteer soldiers who fought during the First World War
  • Find out how Finland’s famous airline, Finnair, first took off
  • Be tempted to take a plunge at the Ounasvaaran Latu Ice Hole

Join this Arctic storyteller on a walk through Rovaniemi’s city center and discover its iconic sights and fascinating history. By the end of this hour-long tour you’ll see how, with its unique blend of nature, culture and Christmas spirit, Rovaniemi captures the hearts of visitors from around the world.

In the northern reaches of Europe, amidst the crisp air and breathtaking landscapes, resides an Arctic storyteller whose words weave magic into the frozen silence. Meet Lars Engerengen, a passionate narrator of the Arctic wilderness, a voice that carries the echoes of history and the whispers of untamed nature.

Living beneath the shimmering Northern Lights and the endless glow of the Midnight Sun, Lars discovered his fascination for the Arctic’s lore in childhood. Nights spent listening to age-old tales by the fireside sparked a curiosity that would shape his life’s journey. That spark grew into a flame as he ventured across icy tundras, sailed through fjords, and trekked along snow-laden paths, collecting stories etched into the land and its people.

His storytelling is more than words—it is an immersive experience. With a voice that soothes and inspires, Lars transports listeners to remote landscapes where ancient myths meet modern realities. Through his narratives, one feels the biting wind, hears the crunch of snow underfoot, and senses the resilience of those who carved out life in this harsh yet beautiful region.

Lars doesn't tell you everything, but he tells you enough to pique your curiosity. Enough to make you want to learn more. Enough to make you want to stay a while longer.

Join Lars on a journey beyond the ordinary—a voyage into the soul of the Arctic. Each tale is an invitation to explore a world where nature reigns supreme, and history lingers in every frozen breath. Step into the story, and let the Arctic speak through him.

Tips

Places to stop along the way

The Rovaniemi tour goes through most of the city centre, and there are lots of places to stop at or rest along the way. I might suggest the restaurant Valdemari, by the riverside beach, outside the Aalto Hall, Korundi Culture Center or in the small park by Koskikatu road.

Best time of day

This tour can be walked all day - all year. Please consider the weather.

Precautions

The tour is using both gravel paths and hard sidewalks, so it is possible for all. Take caution if the conditions are icy.
