Hanseatic Heritage: A Walking Tour of Rostock
About the Tour
Rostock has transformed from a medieval trading post to a vibrant Baltic port city – thanks, in part, to being a Hanseatic League member since the 1200s. On this walking tour, you’ll discover the well-preserved architecture, historic gates, and trading traditions, which all tell the story of how this maritime powerhouse earned its place among the most influential port cities in Northern Europe.
The tour starts in Market Square outside the impressive City Hall, with its distinctive pink baroque facade concealing the original Gothic structure. You’ll walk along the longest surviving section of Rostock’s medieval wall, passing through the oldest city gate in Northern Germany, and explore Rostocker Rosengarten, the Rose Garden where a fortress once stood. Along the way, you’ll learn how the Hanseatic League brought four centuries of prosperity to Rostock before its decline in the 1600s.
The tour ends at the impressive St. Mary’s Church (Marienkirche) with its remarkable astronomical clock – the only one of its kind in operation. After the tour you may want to stroll towards the harbor where you can explore restaurants and cafés along the waterfront.
During this 60-minute tour, you’ll have a chance to:
- Examine the Steintor city gate and find out the symbolism behind its contrasting facades
- Visit the beautifully preserved Abbey of the Holy Cross, where wealthy Rostock families sent their daughters to become nuns
- Explore the Ratschow House, featuring the only surviving Gothic facade on Kröpeliner Strasse
- See the striking “Fountain of Joy” with its 20 figures representing various activities
- See the University of Rostock, Germany’s fourth oldest, and walk through the vibrant Kröpeliner Strasse, Rostock’s main shopping street
- Marvel at the Duke of Mecklenburg’s palace, built in 1714 with sections dating back to 1620
Take this tour to experience the maritime heritage of one of Northern Germany’s most important Hanseatic cities, where medieval history meets modern Baltic port life.
Tour Producer
Jo Eckardt
My name is Jo Eckardt. I studied literature, history, and social work - in Cologne and then in New York where I lived from 1984 to 2001. In 2001 I returned to Germany, settling in Berlin, my favorite city!
A few years later I started my own touring company called A Friend in Berlin (www.afriendinberlin.de). There is so much to see and experience in Berlin: the obvious highlights and landmarks, reminders of Berlin's complicated past, but also lots of surprises such as the many parks and canals, beer gardens, and amazing restaurants at reasonable prices. What I love most though are the stories behind the landmarks - when history becomes alive.
I also love traveling in other cities and regions, especially in historic towns, and I've created several VoiceMap tours to share my passion with you. Check out all my tours! I also write books, mostly in German, but some are in English too (under the name Jo Thun).
