Tips
Places to stop along the way
If you have time, visit the cave of Saint Ioan of Rila, also known as the Ivan Rilski Cave.
This is where he lived in seclusion for many years and is located just 3 km from the main territory of the Monastery.
In the cave, on a stone bed, you will see numerous icons left here by worshipers. Many also leave notes asking for the health of their relatives and loved ones.
It is believed that you will be purified of negative thoughts if you manage to fit through the small opening at the cave's upper entrance.
Best time of day
You can do this tour all year round. But Hrelyo Tower is open to visitors only from May till October. These are also the best months for visit due to the more favourable weather conditions. The busiest hours are usually between 11 am and 3 pm, especially at summer weekends. I personally advise you to come at or before 10 am so that you could enjoy more peaceful time here. You should spare at least three hours for full experience.
