Oregon Coast Series: A Reedsport to Newport Northbound Drive
About the Tour
The Oregon Coast between Reedsport and Newport isn't just scenic – it's the kind of landscape that inspired sci-fi novels, swallowed rivers whole, and once rained whale blubber on a crowd of onlookers. On this driving tour, you'll trace 70 miles of coastline where towering sand dunes give way to black volcanic cliffs. You'll also uncover the eccentric history, geological chaos, and accidental disasters that make this stretch of Highway 101 unlike any other road in America.
The tour starts at the Umpqua Discovery Center in Reedsport, crossing Conde McCullough's remarkable 1936 swing-span bridge before rolling past Gardiner, a company town where International Paper once mandated every building be painted white – or else. From there, you'll learn how migrating sand dunes dammed an entire river to create Tahkenitch Lake, and how a struggling freelance writer named Frank Herbert looked down at these same dunes from a small plane and invented Arrakis.
As the sandy coast slams into volcanic basalt north of Florence, the stops stack up fast. You'll visit the Sea Lion Caves, a natural rock cathedral 200 feet underground, then pass Heceta Head Lighthouse – the most photographed in America – and its famously haunted keeper's house. At Cape Perpetua, the ocean has carved Thor's Well, the Devil's Churn, and the Spouting Horn out of solid basalt. The tour ends at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in South Beach, where Oregon State University scientists study everything from marine genetics to tsunami preparedness, and a real blue whale skeleton sits reassembled in the courtyard.
On this 120-minute tour, you'll have a chance to:
- Hear how a half-ton of dynamite failed spectacularly to dispose of a beached sperm whale in 1970
- Walk a living green tunnel of wind-sculpted Sitka spruce trees on the hidden Hobbit Trail
- Learn how Depression-era workers, suspended on ropes above crashing waves, carved the
Half-Million Dollar Mile
out of solid cliff face - Explore Florence's Old Town waterfront, where everything once arrived by steamship
- Discover how Waldport's Alsea Bay became one of Oregon's best recreational crabbing spots
- Visit Yachats' Little Log Church, built in 1930 by horse-hauled timber in the shape of a crucifix
This is the Oregon Coast at its most dramatic, strange, and deeply satisfying. Don't drive it on autopilot.

Tips
Places to stop along the way
You absolutely won't be able to stop at every single one of these in a single day, but here is a curated list of the best places to stretch your legs, grab a bite, or take in the history along our route:
Umpqua Discovery Center (Reedsport):** Our starting point. If you have time before hitting Start,
this fantastic waterfront museum offers a deep dive into the region's logging and coastal history.
Oregon Dunes Overlook:** A massive, non-negotiable must-stop if you want to walk directly out onto the shifting, 500-foot sands of the largest coastal dunes in North America (the real-life inspiration for Dune).
Historic Old Town Florence:** As we cross the Siuslaw River Bridge, you'll have the option to drop into this picturesque, historic riverfront district. It's the perfect spot to grab a mid-tour coffee, browse the galleries, or grab a bowl of clam chowder.
Sea Lion Caves (North of Florence):** America’s largest sea cave. If you don't mind the pungent smell and the admission fee, taking the elevator 200 feet down into the basalt cliffs to see hundreds of wild Steller sea lions is an unforgettable experience.
Heceta Head Lighthouse State Scenic Viewpoint:** One of the most photographed lighthouses on the entire Pacific coast. A short, half-mile hike takes you right up to the base of the tower and the historic keeper’s home.
Hobbit Trail and Beach:** A magical, hidden half-mile hike that winds right through a dense, moss-covered tunnel of Sitka spruce trees before dropping you out onto a spectacular, secluded stretch of sand.
Cape Perpetua Scenic Area:** The absolute crown jewel of the area's violent volcanic geology. Park near the visitor center to access the trails leading down to the crashing meat grinder
of Devil’s Churn, the Spouting Horn blowhole, and the terrifying sinkhole known as Thor’s Well.
Luna Sea Fish House (Yachats):** If you are getting hungry as we roll through the village of Yachats, this local staple is legendary for its fresh, locally caught fish and chips and crab melts.
Seal Rock State Recreation Site:** A quick, fantastic pull-off featuring massive, dramatic basalt sea stacks protecting a sandy beach. It is one of the absolute best, safest spots for tide-pooling on the entire Central Coast.
Oregon Coast Aquarium (Newport):** As we wrap up the tour in Newport, this world-class aquarium is a must-visit. Walk through its massive underwater acrylic tunnels and get up close with sharks, sea otters, and the region's rich marine life.
Hatfield Marine Science Center (Newport):** This interactive, hands-on research facility run by Oregon State University offers a deep dive into marine biology and features a resident giant Pacific octopus.
Best time of day
You can take this tour year-round, and every season offers a completely different experience—from sunny summer road trips to dramatic, crashing winter storm-watching.
However, the single most important factor is the sun: this tour is designed exclusively for daylight hours. The spectacular coastal viewpoints, historic lighthouses, and massive sand dunes become completely invisible once the sun goes down.
Start early in the day so you have plenty of time to safely pull over, stretch your legs, and take in the incredible views before dusk.
Precautions
The Oregon Coast is stunning but notoriously unpredictable. Because cell service frequently drops out along Highway 101, it is absolutely critical that you download the tour over Wi-Fi before you hit the road so you don't lose the audio. Weather can change in an instant, so pack in layers—bring a windbreaker or rain jacket even in the middle of summer, along with sunblock and plenty of drinking water. If you plan to explore spots like Thor’s Well or the Devil's Churn, sturdy, grippy shoes are an absolute must to navigate the slick volcanic rock (leave the flip-flops in the car). Finally, always respect the Pacific: stay back from cliff edges and never turn your back on the ocean, as deadly, unpredictable sneaker waves
can surge up the beach without any warning.
