About the Tour

Raleigh was purpose-built as a state capital in 1792, and that civic ambition still shapes every block of its downtown.

On this walking tour, you’ll find out how a planned government city became a canvas for public art, civil rights history, and creative reinvention.

The tour starts outside the Raleigh Convention Center, where an 11-foot bronze statue of Sir Walter Raleigh sets the historical tone. You’ll wind through streets lined with murals and past the North Carolina State Capitol’s Greek Revival granite walls. Following City Market’s cobblestone lanes, you’ll make your way towards the Warehouse District’s contemporary arts scene.

As you walk, you’ll hear how Lincoln Theatre served Raleigh’s Black community during segregation. I’ll point out Moore Square – one of five original public squares from the city’s 1792 founding plan – and Nash Square, home to the North Carolina Fallen Firefighters Memorial. The tour ends at Raleigh Union Station’s observation deck, where you can watch trains arrive and depart against the city skyline.

On this 60-minute tour, you’ll have a chance to:

  • Learn how Mayor Harrison negotiated Raleigh’s peaceful Civil War surrender, sparing the city from the destruction that leveled Atlanta
  • See the Shimmer Wall, a 210-foot aluminum sculpture that transforms with the wind on the back of the Convention Center
  • Explore Artspace, a nonprofit studio complex housing over 35 working artists at the heart of Raleigh’s First Fridays arts scene
  • Visit Bex the T-Rex, a crowd-pleasing dinosaur installation outside Marbles Kids Museum that was meant to be temporary but never left
  • Spot the All Are Welcome and Too Small to Fail murals by artist Luke Buchanan
  • Stand outside Death and Taxes, a fine dining restaurant in a building that opened in 1907 as a coffin shop during the Spanish Flu epidemic
  • Admire the eight-story Green City, USA mural, whose interlocking geometric triangles link Raleigh’s oak-lined parks to its Research Triangle tech identity

This tour packs Raleigh’s art, history, and character into a single walk. It will also leave you perfectly placed to explore the Warehouse District’s restaurants and bars afterward.

Tour Producer

Hi, I’m Sydney. I grew up in West Virginia and spent six years in Washington, DC for graduate school and the early years of my career before relocating to Raleigh in 2020. I initially moved to work for North Carolina’s Soil and Water Conservation Division, and I now serve as a Sustainability Projects Manager for a nonprofit focused on sustainable agriculture. I have more than a decade of experience in environmental science and cross-sector sustainability work, collaborating with government agencies, nonprofits, and industry partners.

Raleigh quickly became more than just home. It became a place I wanted to understand deeply—its civic history, architecture, planning decisions, and evolving cultural identity. For my tours, I try to document historical context and the broader environmental and economic force rather than listing landmarks. I focus on helping listeners understand why places exist and how they connect.

Outside of my professional work, my partner Daniel and I document our travels on our blog, Cubeless Chronicles, where we reflect on history, place, and the experience of exploring new cities. After years of using VoiceMap tours around the world to better understand the destinations we visit, I decided to create some! I hope you enjoy listening to them as much as I did making these tours!

Tips

Places to stop along the way

there are several places along this route that are worth stopping, depending on how you want to experience the tour. For cultural stops, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and the North Carolina Museum of History are the most substantial options, both offering free admission and enough depth to justify a longer pause. For something smaller and more directly tied to downtown, the City of Raleigh Museum is an efficient stop that complements the themes of the tour. Food and drink are often the most practical reasons to pause, and several strong options are either on or just off the route, including Death & Taxes for a more refined meal, Whiskey Kitchen for a lively bar and Southern-inspired menu, Parkside Restaurant for an easy, centrally located stop overlooking Moore Square, and The Pit for classic North Carolina barbecue. For more casual or flexible stops, Brewery Bhavana offers a unique combination of brewery, dim sum, and retail space, while Crank Arm Brewing Company is a convenient option for a quick beer break. Big Eds in City Market is also the best spot for breakfast in the city!

Best time of day

Take this tour anytime, it is especially beautiful when the city is in bloom during the spring or when the fall leaves of the oak trees come alive with color.

Precautions

Make sure to use the crosswalks and enjoy all the hustle and bustle that comes with a walking tour in a city.
