Princeton University Walking Tour: From Campus to Einstein's House
About the Tour
Princeton sits at a rare intersection of colonial history, revolutionary politics, and world-changing intellect. On this walking tour, you'll trace how a small colonial college became a cradle of American democracy, shaped by presidents, physicists, and a few literary legends along the way.
The tour starts at the FitzRandolph Gate, the ceremonial entrance most students refuse to use for fear of never graduating. From here, you'll explore Nassau Hall, which briefly served as the United States Capitol in 1783, and wind through the Gothic archways of East Pyne Hall, a courtyard that has doubled as a film set for A Beautiful Mind, Transformers, and Oppenheimer. You'll pass the University Chapel, whose architect immortalized himself among the gargoyles, and stroll through Prospect Garden, designed by one of America's first female landscape architects.
The tour continues off campus along Mercer Street, past the modest home where Albert Einstein lived for 20 years, and through quiet residential streets lined with houses connected to Woodrow Wilson, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Peter Benchley. You'll also pass the site of Princeton's only unsolved murder. You'll pass Princeton University's elegant Greek Revival guest house before returning along Nassau Street to the FitzRandolph Gate, where the tour ends.
On this 75-minute tour, you'll have a chance to:
- Rub the bronze tigers' ears outside Nassau Hall – a student tradition before exams
- Explore Cannon Green, where a captured British cannon remains buried barrel-down since the 1770s
- Hear how Blair Arch's perfect acoustics transformed it into Princeton's premier a cappella stage
- Learn which dormitory F. Scott Fitzgerald occupied before flunking out and writing This Side of Paradise
- Discover how Whig Hall and Clio Hall shaped future senators, Supreme Court justices, and presidents
- See the former home of Peter Benchley, whose Halloween haunted house was as legendary as Jaws
- Visit the Nassau Club, where Einstein required an emergency jacket kept on standby by staff
Whether you're a history enthusiast, a literature lover, or simply someone who appreciates a great story told in a beautiful setting, this tour is for you.
Tour Producer
I’ve called Princeton, New Jersey home for many years, and my tours reflect my deep appreciation for history, unique characters, and hidden stories. My professional background is in advertising, where I founded a digital audio company that delivered music and messaging in grocery and drug stores across the United States—so storytelling through sound has always been part of what I do.
I’m an avid traveler, both in the U.S. and abroad, with a particular interest in museums, historic sites, and cultural landmarks. I design tours the way I like to experience them—engaging, informative, and full of memorable details you might otherwise miss.
When I’m not creating tours, you’ll likely find me hiking, playing golf, or flying my vintage Navion airplane as a private pilot.

The tour begins in the center of Princeton and at the main entrance to Princeton University at the Fitzrandolph Gate. This starting point is on Nassau Street at the intersection with Witherspoon Street.
If you drove to Princeton, there is generally three hour metered parking on the streets and there are also two parking garages nearby at Spring Street and Hulfish Street.
Tips
Places to stop along the way
Princeton has a broad selection of cafes, bars and restaurants. I touch on a wide selection of options during the tour.
Best time of day
This is an outdoor walking tour and can be done anytime of year. Spring and Fall periods when classes are in session tend to be the busiest, but the campus is most lively and exciting when the University is in session. The summers tend to be a bit more quiet.
Precautions
The only precaution on this tour is to cross streets carefully and at the crosswalk.
