Tales Behind the House Signs of Old Prague
About the Tour
When I first came to Prague as a child, I was enchanted by the beauty of its Old Town. Every residential building is a work of art thanks to the city’s house signs. Later in life, my curiosity led me on a quest to find out more, and I’ll share what I’ve discovered so far on this walk through medieval Prague’s most charming streets. Their pictures and symbols on signs reveal the history of each and every house, but they also tell a story about local culture.
Some of the highlights include:
- Finding out about life in the medieval city
- Listening to the stories and gloomy legends of the people who lived in the city
- Getting a glimpse of the theatre where Mozart worked
- Visiting the medieval market in the St. Gallus Quarter
- Visiting St. Giles Church, one of the oldest in Prague
- Admiring one of Prague’s most charming public squares, the Little Square
This tour offers a taste of Prague to first time visitors, but I hope it’s also an inspiration for those who know the city and want to discover more about it.
Tour Producer
Jana Vesela
I am Jana, a passionate traveler and lover of art and history. I have lived in Prague for almost three decades and I work as a language teacher and professional freelance tour guide. My cultural trips to Italy have shaped my interest in architecture and deepened my ability to see Prague's history in a broader European context. Thanks to my passion for languages, I am happy to accompany individual visitors and school groups from all over the world and offer tours on the history, architecture and literature of Prague. I am very interested in Jewish history and I offer tours of the Jewish Quarter of Prague as well.
I have been working with VoiceMap since 2020.
My audiotours reveal different aspects of Prague. I love the idea that, in addition to the usual highlights, visitors can discover lesser-known but charming places and curious legends from the past of this fascinating city, all this in absolute autonomy and at a low-traffic time of day.

Tips
Places to stop along the way
If you want to try the famous Czech draft beer, the pub At the Golden Tiger (Husova 17) is a perfect choice. For the ones who go rather for ice cream and coffee, I recommend the cafe Creme de la Creme (Husova 12) in the same street, in the house At the Three Standard Bearers.
Best time of day
I suggest taking this tour in the morning hours (before 9am) when the city is not yet crowded. But of course, you can take it any time of day.
Precautions
Prague is a very safe city, but of course, it is always good to watch your belongings, not to give a chance to pickpockets, especially in crowded places. Be careful when crossing the streets and use the zebra crossings when possible.
