About the Tour

Prague is a living museum, where Gothic spires and Baroque domes create one of Europe’s most enchanting skylines. On this walking tour produced by Prague-born guide and Context Travel expert Jiri Styblo, you’ll walk through the labyrinthine streets of the Old Town while getting an insider’s view on this bustling city.

The tour starts at the House of the Black Madonna, one of the world’s few Cubist buildings. As you wander through the Old Town’s narrow lanes, you’ll hear stories about religious reformers, artistic pioneers, and political revolutions that unfolded in these streets. You’ll also find out about the city’s transformation from medieval marketplace to modern capital, and learn to understand the complex cultural shifts that have defined Czech identity.

You’ll venture beyond the standard tourist route and follow a passage through the historic Klementinum complex, the former Jesuit college, before crossing the iconic Charles Bridge. As you make your way to the charming Lesser Quarter, where the tour ends, Jiri will share personal insights into contemporary Czech life, from beer culture to local cuisine, ensuring you get an authentic taste of Prague beyond its magnificent monuments.

Along the way, you’ll have a chance to:

  • Marvel at Prague’s Astronomical Clock, the third-oldest operational astronomical clock in the world, and spot the sophisticated medieval mechanics most tourists miss
  • Stand in the historic Old Town Square where Jan Hus, the revolutionary church reformer who preceded Martin Luther by a century, has a striking monument to commemorate him
  • Hear the extraordinary story of how Cubist architecture flourished uniquely in Prague, making it the only city worldwide where this avant-garde style applied to buildings
  • Walk in Mozart’s footsteps at the Estates Theatre, where the composer premiered his opera Don Giovanni to thunderous applause in 1787
  • Cross the magnificent Charles Bridge while hearing the surprising truth behind the tradition of touching St. John of Nepomuk’s statue
  • Learn about pivotal moments in Czech history, from the Hussite movement to the Velvet Revolution

By the end of this 45-minute tour, you’ll have grasped why Prague has enchanted visitors for centuries, and will leave with a deeper appreciation for the stories behind “the city of a hundred spires.“

Getting There

Route Overview

VoiceMap tours follow a route from a set starting point. It’s how we give turn-by-turn directions and tell a story greater than the sum of its parts.
  1. Total distance
    3km
  2. Distance back to start location
    2km

Directions to Starting Point

Tour starts by the House at the Black Madonna in Prague, located at Ovocný trh 19 in the Old Town. Can be reached easily either by taxi or public transportation. If taking a taxi, it’s best to avoid overpaying by using reliable ride-hailing apps like Uber or Bolt. Traditional taxis are also available, but it's important to confirm the price before the ride to avoid being overcharged. To use public transportation, the most convenient metro stops are Náměstí Republiky or Můstek, both on Metro Line B (the yellow line) and just a short walk from the building. Trams that stop at Náměstí Republiky also provide convenient access. Once in the area, please look out for a distinctive Cubist corner building with a small statue of a black Madonna on the facade.

Tips

Places to stop along the way

If you’re in the mood for a proper meal, Mincovna, right on Old Town Square, offers honest Czech cuisine in a stylish setting. After crossing a Charles bridge, there is a nice opportunity to grab a local beer at Lokál U Bílé Kuželky.

I also recommend stopping at House at the Golden Ring just out of the Old Town sq. This Gothic-Renaissance building houses several permanent exhibitions of City of Prague Museum (Prague of Charles IV – The Medieval Town, Prague 1606). I really like the way these exhibitions are presented and this museum stays unknown to crowds mostly.

Best time of day

Try to avoid the Old Town sq 11 AM to 2 PM due to crowds. Same applies for the Charles Bridge. Generally speaking though, tour is doable from dawn to dusk. Early morning sounds the best if you get a chance.

Keep in mind that The Astronomical Clock at Old Town Square performs its famous hourly show daily from 8:00 AM to 11:00 PM always on top of the hour.

Precautions

Please bring a pair of headphones and your water bottle. Don't forget to keep an eye on your belongings.

“Great app. walk around at your own pace, stop where you want, move on or speed up when you want. Read the script before you go or during the commentary, speed it up or replay it. Repeat the tour whenever you like.”
