About the Tour

The Columbia River Gorge is more than just a scenic drive. It’s a landscape defined by catastrophe.

On this four-hour driving tour, you’ll travel from the moss-drenched rainforests of the “Wet Side” to the sun-baked high desert, tracing the path of Oregon Trail pioneers. You’ll find out where violent floods carved a path through the Cascade Range, leaving behind a 140-mile loop of towering waterfalls, vertical basalt cliffs, and distinct climatic zones. Along the way, you’ll hear stories about log flumes, billionaire eccentrics, and the legendary beasts rumored to hide in the forests.

Your journey begins in Troutdale (east side of Portland) on the Historic Columbia River Highway. You’ll pass the “Waterfall Corridor” where the highest concentration of waterfalls in North America awaits. As you drive east toward Hood River and The Dalles, you’ll witness a dramatic transformation: in just 90 minutes, the fir trees vanish, the rain stops, and the moss turns to golden grass as you enter the rain shadow of the Columbia Plateau.

Crossing the mighty Columbia River, the return leg takes you along the rugged cliffs of Washington’s Highway 14 to the “Wild Side,” which offers a quieter, steeper perspective. The tour concludes with the sweeping views at Cape Horn, looking back at the river spreading out toward the ocean.

On this self-guided tour, you’ll also have the chance to:

  • Meet Herman the Sturgeon, an 80-year-old, ten-foot prehistoric celebrity at the Bonneville Hatchery
  • Witness the plunging column of Latourell Falls, the “Crown Jewel” views from Vista House, and the 620-foot grandeur of Multnomah Falls
  • Learn the true Hollywood story of how Lassie rode a nine-mile wooden log flume down a mountain at 35 mph
  • Visit a full-scale concrete replica of Stonehenge built by a Quaker businessman on a lonely bluff
  • Admire the massive monolith of Beacon Rock, the wildflowers of Dog Mountain, and the legendary Bridge of the Gods
  • Drive through the only place in the Western Hemisphere where killing a Sasquatch is a felony
  • Hear the story of the “Silver Skeletons” and the teenager whose smoke bomb changed the map of Oregon forever
  • Discover how the state blew up a masterpiece tunnel in the 1960s, only to spend millions boring through rock to fix the mistake

This tour gives you the freedom to stop at waterfalls, skip ahead when you’re hungry, or pause to soak in the views – all while learning why this gorge is one of the most geologically violent and beautiful places in America.

Best time of day

Truthfully, there is no wrong time to drive the Columbia River Gorge. Unlike many scenic drives that dry up or close down, these massive waterfalls run year-round. In fact, I highly recommend driving this loop more than once so you can witness the dramatic personality changes of the canyon. You can come in the spring to see the moss at its greenest and the waterfalls at their most violent, or return in the autumn when the cottonwoods turn gold. Winter brings a moody, misty atmosphere that feels like a film noir set, while summer offers sparkling blue skies.

Of course, with beauty comes popularity. Summer weekends can be crowded, and traffic can slow down on the narrow historic highway. But that is exactly why you are taking an audio tour. Instead of sitting in silence during a slow patch, you’ll be hearing stories about bigfoot, geology, and billionaires. The narration is designed to keep you entertained no matter the pace of the road.

The one logistical hurdle you should be aware of is Multnomah Falls. It is the most popular natural site in the Pacific Northwest, and parking in the summer can be a challenge. You have two main options: you can book a reservation in advance for the I-84 parking lot (which is a timed-use area), or you can try your luck at the smaller lot on the Historic Highway. Don’t worry about memorizing this now—as we get closer to the falls, the audio tour will give you specific instructions for both approaches. And if you decide you don't want to fight for a spot? I’ll guide you on how to get a great view of the falls without ever leaving your car.

As for timing your day, my best advice is to leave the starting point in Troutdale around 10:00 or 11:00 AM. This pace puts you in the town of Hood River right around 1:00 PM—perfect timing to grab lunch at a brewery or a riverfront restaurant before we cross the bridge. Just remember that this is a visual tour, so you want to maximize your daylight. If you are driving in the winter when the sun sets early, you might want to start a bit sooner to make sure you catch the majestic views on the Washington side before dark.

Precautions

  1. The Multnomah Falls Parking Challenge This is the most popular natural site in the Pacific Northwest, and parking can be competitive, especially in summer. You have two options:

I-84 Parking Lot: This is the large lot located in the middle of the freeway. During peak season (late May through September), you may need a Timed Use Permit reserved in advance online at Recreation.gov.

Historic Highway Lot: There is a smaller lot directly in front of the lodge. This does not usually require a permit, but it fills up very early.

Pro Tip: If you can’t find parking, don’t worry. The audio tour continues past the falls, and there are many other spectacular waterfalls on this route (like Latourell and Horsetail) where parking is much easier.

  1. Driving Conditions

Narrow Roads: The Historic Columbia River Highway is beautiful but very narrow with tight curves. Large RVs and trailers are not recommended for the waterfall section or the Rowena Loops section.

The Rain Shadow: You will be driving through two distinct climates. It is common to start in pouring rain in Portland and end up in bright, hot sun in The Dalles.

  1. What to Bring

Sunglasses & Rain Jacket: Because of the changing microclimates, you will likely need both!

Full Tank of Gas: Fill up in Troutdale before you start. Gas stations are infrequent once you cross to the Washington side (Highway 14).

Downloaded Tour: Cell service can be spotty in the deep canyon. Please download this tour over Wi-Fi before you leave so the GPS triggers work seamlessly offline.
