About the Tour

While most Indian cities have colonial British roots, Pondicherry offers a unique slice of French history in Tamil Nadu state. On this walking tour, you’ll take in the quaint and colourful former French colony and learn about the people who shaped it.

Our tour starts in front of the Marquis Dupleix Statue in Pondicherry’s White Town. You’ll make your way along Promenade Beach and deeper into the town, where I’ll show you this tropical French outpost’s significant buildings, and tell you stories about the men who built them.

You’ll see Arulmigu Manakula Vinayagar Devasthanam, a colourful Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Ganesh, and stroll through Bharathi Park Puducherry. I’ll also lead you to Black Town, where you can explore its lively temples and colourful markets, before ending our tour in front of the bustling Goubert Market, one of the oldest in the city.

On this Pondicherry tour, you’ll have a chance to:

  • Hear about the great figures in India’s recent history, from Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar (the ‘Father of India’), to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, independent India’s first Prime Minister
  • Discover the empire behind the utopian city of nearby Auroville, and its connection with Sri Aurobindu the scholar who founded it
  • Become familiar with Joseph Francois Dupleix, the man who transformed the town from a fisherman’s village
  • Pop into the Puducherry Museum where you can see traces of the city’s history going as far back as the Romans
  • See the beautiful colonial mansion at the Consulat Général de France (the French consulate)
  • Take in the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, a rare example of baroque architecture in Pondicherry

By the end of this 75-minute tour, you’ll know the history behind the familiar names of people and places that jump out around every corner. You’ll also have a chance to visit some lovely coffee shops where you can find amazing local food.

Hey — or Bonjour, as we say in my home country. I’m Fabienne, a French historian and licensed guide, currently based in Chennai, India. For the past 25 years, I’ve been traveling the world, exploring cultures and sharing their stories.

Since arriving in India four years ago, I’ve published two books, both on Amazon in English and French. The first, Tamil Letters, explores the unique cultural and historical identity of Southern India. The second is a children’s book titled Prem, the Little Bonze, created to inspire young readers. I am currently working on a third book, reflecting on how deeply this incredible country has inspired me.

Living in India has deepened my curiosity and strengthened my desire to better understand its people and history — a history I now feel, in a small way, connected to. Through my books, my blog (https://visitesfabienne.org/), and my history-focused tours, I’m always eager to share the insights and discoveries I’ve gathered along the way.

My goal is to challenge the stereotypes and misconceptions often associated with India. I aim to show how daily life here — vibrant, diverse, complex, and beautiful — can differ greatly from what many in the Western world imagine.

I love uncovering the lesser-known stories behind history. Through my audio guides and blog, I invite you to explore the places and anecdotes I cherish most across India.

Tips

Places to stop along the way

If you need a stop I recommend le Café des Arts, (10 Suffren Street) Eat my Cake (5 rue Romain Rolland) or le Café coromandel (8 rue Romain Rolland) for a drink and a snack.
La villa (11 Surcouf Street) for a fancy dinner. Anthe (45B corner Romain Rolland Street) can also be a good option if you fancy a new and trendy place.

Best time of day

Try to follow this route early Morning or late in the afternoon to beat the heat. January and February are cooler and dry. Avoid the hottest months, April to July and the Monsoon season November to December.

Precautions

South India is a tropical and hot region. Come prepared and do not forget your sunglasses, a hat if necessary, a big bottle of water, sunscreen and mosquito repellent. Do not hesitate to stop in the shade anytime you feel the need. I'll be waiting for you.
