About the Tour

Cape Woolamai was shaped by millions of years of violent ocean swells and fierce Antarctic winds. On this coastal walking tour, you’ll discover how this dramatic granite headland that marks the southern tip of Phillip Island became the setting for one of Australia’s most successful conservation programs. You’ll also explore sea caves carved by hydraulic action, pink granite cliffs that supplied stone for Melbourne’s Parliament House, and the nesting grounds of seabirds that migrate 15,000 kilometres from Alaska each year.

The tour starts at Woolamai Surf Beach, a designated National Surfing Reserve known for its powerful waves and dangerous rip currents. You’ll climb timber stairs through shearwater colonies, and follow clifftop tracks through coastal heathland. You’ll make your way to the Cape Woolamai Beacon at 112 metres above sea level, the highest point on Phillip Island, before descending to the sheltered waters of Cleeland Bight.

Along the way, you’ll hear about how George Bass landed his open whaleboat in 1798, naming this fish-shaped headland after the Eora word for snapper, and explore the ruins of the granite quarry that once supplied stone for Melbourne’s iconic buildings. The tour ends back at the Woolamai Surf Beach car park where you began your journey.

On this 150-minute circular walk, you’ll have a chance to:

  • Stand before the Pinnacles, towering granite columns sculpted by 360 million years of weathering and pounded by Southern Ocean swells
  • Trace the fox eradication program that saved the island’s Little Penguin colonies from certain extinction
  • Witness the nesting burrows of Short-tailed Shearwaters, birds that navigate 30,000-kilometre annual migrations to return to the exact same burrow
  • Learn how Eastern Barred Bandicoots were brought back from just 44 survivors to become ecosystem engineers turning over tonnes of soil
  • Discover the industrial ruins of the Old Granite Quarry, where 1890s workers used plug-and-feather techniques to split massive stone blocks
  • Explore Gull Island from the eastern clifftops, where Pacific Gulls and Pied Oystercatchers nest on isolated granite outcrops
  • Walk the traditional lands of the Bunurong people, who harvested shearwater eggs and managed this country for thousands of years

This circuit combines dramatic ocean scenery with inspiring conservation success stories, offering one of Victoria’s most rewarding coastal walks through a landscape that’s both ancient and actively healing.

Peter is a dedicated Phillip Island local who bridges the gap between education and conservation. By profession, Peter is a university lecturer, where his career has focused on engagement and communication. By passion, he is a committed conservationist who has spent years immersing himself in the unique wildlife and rugged landscapes of the island he calls home.

Living on Phillip Island, Peter has developed a profound connection to its coastlines - from the shearwater rookeries of Cape Woolamai to the penguin colonies of the Summerland Peninsula. He combines his professional skills as an educator with his local field knowledge to work as a part-time tour guide, helping visitors see beyond the scenery to understand the deep history and delicate ecosystems of the region.

Peter is also an active community volunteer, dedicating his time to protecting the island’s fragile environment and ensuring its stories are preserved. Every year, he shares his knowledge and experiences with thousands of visitors, driven by the belief that the best way to protect a place is to help people fall in love with it. Whether he is explaining the geology of a granite cliff or the migration of a seabird, Peter’s goal is to inspire others to tread lightly and leave with a lasting appreciation for this special corner of the world.

Tips

Places to stop along the way

If you are here during the summer months, you may find the kiosk at the Woolamai Beach Surf Club open. Funds from this kiosk support the surf lifesavers, so please support them if you can.

After your tour, I can recommend the Wooli Tavern, a local pub 2km back along the Woolamai Beach Rd. They have an excellent menu, and serve cold drinks every day and into the evenings, 7 days a week.

Best time of day

Whilst this tour is available 24/7, it is not recommended after sunset, as the tracks and clifftop walks are best navigated during daylight hours. You should also consider the weather conditions, as sections of the walk are exposed to strong winds.

Parts of this tour are along the sandy beaches of Phillip Island, so it is best attempted at low-to-mid tide, otherwise you may be dodging waves, or get wet feet in a couple of locations. You can check the tide times here: https://www.tide-forecast.com/locations/Phillip-Island/tides/latest

Precautions

This tour is likely to take you between two and three hours. The walk involves some steady uphill tracks, and a couple of sections with stairs. You should have a reasonable level of physical fitness to attempt this tour. You should carry a bottle of water with you, as there is none available on the tour.

Please be prepared for any weather. The conditions along the clifftops can change quickly, so a windproof jacket is recommended, even during the summer months. Sunscreen and a hat are also essential, as the harsh Australian sun can burn quickly, even when the wind is keeping you cool.

Do not enter the water along the beaches, unless you are a very strong swimmer. There are hidden rip tides, particularly along the first section of the walk. If you do choose to go swimming, always do so between the official red and yellow flags, and only when the beaches are patrolled.

Dogs are not permitted in this area, to protect the many species of vulnerable and endangered wildlife.
