Victor Hugo’s Notre Dame: Heroes, History, Architecture
About the Tour
Paris’ Notre-Dame Cathedral is a testament to eight centuries of ambition, faith, and rebirth. On this literary-historical tour, you’ll experience the cathedral through the eyes of Victor Hugo, whose 1831 novel Notre-Dame de Paris (The Hunchback of Notre-Dame) saved this architectural masterpiece from ruin.
The tour starts at Place Jean-Paul II, where you’ll look up at the western façade that Hugo called “a vast symphony in stone.” You’ll explore the cathedral’s interior, from the soaring nave to the elegantly carved choir screen, and discover how Hugo’s novel sparked a restoration movement. As you walk through the ambulatory chapels and stand beneath the radiant rose windows, you’ll learn how this hybrid of architectural styles became the beating heart of Hugo’s story.
Along the way, you’ll hear tales of Esmeralda and Quasimodo, the kind-hearted but misunderstood bell-ringer. I’ll share some of the hidden meanings in the cathedral’s sculptures, and tell you about Notre-Dame’s remarkable survival through revolutions, wars, and most recently, the devastating 2019 fire. The tour ends with a reflection on Hugo’s vision of Notre-Dame as “the great book of humanity” and how, once again, the world has rallied to restore this architectural marvel.
During this 60-minute journey, you’ll have a chance to:
- Discover the Point Zero bronze star – the official center of France, from which all distances are measured
- Admire the three grand portals of the western façade, with their intricate biblical carvings, and stand beneath the south rose window with its 84 medallions surrounding Christ
- View the restored Grands Mays paintings – monumental canvases gifted annually by Parisian goldsmiths
- Appreciate Viollet-le-Duc’s 19th-century restoration work, inspired by Hugo’s vision
- Reflect on the symbolism of
ANANKE
(fate) – the mysterious Greek word that inspired Hugo’s novel - Learn about the Crown of Thorns, one of Christianity’s most precious relics, and its connection to Notre-Dame
- Explore the new visitor path that reopens Hugo’s world in a modern way
- Scale the south tower for sweeping city views and listen to how Hugo described what he saw two centuries ago
Step into the story that saved a cathedral and discover why Notre-Dame continues to captivate hearts around the world.

Moving to Paris from Hong Kong in 2015, I left behind my life as an editor at a cultural magazine. Since then, I've spent the last decade exploring the city both as a local and as a perpetual tourist—wandering through quiet streets, discovering hidden corners, stumbling upon stories tucked away from plain sight.
As a journalist, I was trained to look at the world through a cultural lens—to see not just buildings or streets, but the layers beneath them, rich with history, meaning, and memories. Paris, to me, feels endlessly generous, always revealing something new just when I think I know it by heart.
I’ve spent the past ten years walking the city, blending into its rhythms and uncovering forgotten corners, overlooked details, and hidden stories. My tours are inspired by these discoveries, by the quiet poetry tucked behind familiar facades, the gentle whispers of lives lived and moments passed.
My hope is to show you a Paris beyond postcards and clichés—a city alive with quiet wonders, secret courtyards, hidden echoes of history, and beauty that waits patiently, just out of sight. Come with me; let’s see what this city has kept hidden just for us.
