Phoenicians, Normans, and Anti-Mafia Heroes: A Palermo Walking Tour
About the Tour
Palermo is one of Europe's most layered cities, shaped by nearly every civilization that ever sailed the Mediterranean. On this walking tour, you'll trace the city's story from its Phoenician foundations through Arab and Norman rule to the birth of modern Italy. You'll also hear how the mafia rose, and how ordinary people fought back.
The tour starts at Porta Nuova, a 16th-century gate built to commemorate Holy Roman Emperor Charles V's victory over the Ottomans. From there, you'll visit the Palazzo dei Normanni, whose foundations go back to Phoenician times and whose walls carry the fingerprints of every ruler who followed. You'll then wind through the Mercato al Capo, one of Palermo's great street markets, before reaching the Quattro Canti – the baroque crossroads that once divided the city into four districts – and the infamous Fontana Pretoria, whose naked pagan gods scandalized the nuns next door.
From Piazza Bellini, you'll pass the Vucciria market, an area that traces its name to the French word for butcher, and wander through the streets where the secretive Beati Paoli supposedly kidnapped corrupt nobles under cover of darkness. The tour ends at the Livia Morello Park, a seafront green space beside Porta Felice – a gate a viceroy built in the late 1500s for his wife.
On this 90-minute tour, you'll have a chance to:
- Visit the Palatine Chapel inside Palazzo dei Normanni, considered the oldest royal residence still in use in Europe
- Explore San Cataldo church, whose red Arab-Norman domes have defined Palermo's skyline since 1154
- Hear how the Sicilian Vespers rebellion of the late 1200s handed the island to Spanish rule
- Learn about magistrates Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, who gave their lives fighting Cosa Nostra
- See the Teatro Massimo, Italy's largest opera house and a symbol of the city's civic ambition
- Taste street food straight from the source – arancine, pane câ mèusa, and cannoli
Palermo rewards the curious. Come hungry, keep your bag close, and let the city surprise you.

A History of Italy Podcast
A History of Italy is a weekly podcast in 15/20 minute episodes on the history of the Italian peninsula from the fall of the Western Roman Empire to the present day.
There are plenty of dates, battles and rulers of course, but also a fair share of rabbits winning sieges, swords stuck in uncomfortable places, murder mysteries, naughty popes, monks getting undressed and all other sorts of mischief in the history of the colourful Italians.
It is the author's passion for that history and the fact he lives in Italy that has lead him to explore a country that has more UNESCO world heritage sites than any other in the world and has recently added the national cuisine as well.
The author, Mike Corradi is an Anglo-Italian English teacher living in northern Italy with a passion for travel and history. He has been workinh with VoiceMap since 2019 on more than 20 tours from the most iconic sites of Venice and Rome to the lesser known corners of the two as well as many other hidden gems of the Italian provinces for those who want a more unique and off the beaten track Italian experience.
