Medieval to Modern: A Tour of Nottingham’s Architectural Heritage
About the Tour
There’s far more to Nottingham than its links to Robin Hood. On this walking tour, you’ll see traces of the city’s medieval roots, and find out how it evolved into a modern cultural center. I’ll show you Nottingham’s vibrant arts scene and some iconic (and hidden) pubs, while you explore its beautiful lanes.
The tour commences at The Lacehouse, a cocktail bar in the city’s former lace and textiles hub steeped in history, and concludes at The Arboretum, Nottingham’s inaugural public park. Along the way, I'll tell you about some of the renowned characters from the city’s past, and share lesser-known stories about Nottingham and its identity within the United Kingdom.
You’ll hear about Nottingham’s pivotal role in the 19th-century industrial revolution, particularly in lace-making and textiles. You’ll see beautiful old buildings like St. Mary’s Church and St. Andrew’s with Castle Gate United Reform Church, along with modern structures like the National Justice Museum. At Nottingham Contemporary, you’ll hear a bit about this home for dynamic contemporary art, and how it fosters cultural innovation.
On this hour-long tour, you’ll:
- Find Pitcher & Piano Nottingham, a popular pub hidden within a converted historic church
- Explore the ancient City of Caves, dating back to medieval times
- Stroll along Canal Street where you’ll find Nottingham Crown Court alongside vibrant nightlife venues and a diverse entertainment scene
- See Castle Boulevard which bridges the city center to Nottingham Castle, and is adorned with eclectic shops and eateries
- Visit popular pubs like Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem and Ye Olde Salutation Inn, steeped in history and libations
- Take in the iconic Robin Hood Statue
- Admire urban landmarks like Brewhouse Yard Museum, Albert Street, St. Peter’s Square, Old Market Square, and the Theatre Royal & Royal Concert Hall
- Pass by Nottingham Trent University, a vibrant hub renowned for its academic excellence
Join me for an architectural and historical expedition, unravelling Nottingham’s captivating tales and cherished heritage.
