About the Tour

Niagara Falls isn’t just a natural wonder – it’s where raw power and human ambition came together.

On this walking tour, you’ll discover how these thundering waters sparked a revolution in electricity, inspired death-defying stunts, and concealed an unsolved murder mystery – all while strolling through some of North America’s most stunning gardens.

The tour starts at Oakes Garden Theatre, a Beaux Arts amphitheater named after gold-mining tycoon Sir Harry Oakes, whose unsolved 1943 murder in the Bahamas remains one of Niagara’s greatest mysteries. You’ll walk along the riverside path with close-up views of the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls, where the mist might just cool you off on a summer day.

Along the way, you’ll learn how Serbian inventor Nikola Tesla harnessed these waters to create the world’s first major hydroelectric plant in the 1890s, making nearby Buffalo the first fully illuminated city. You’ll hear stories about barrel riders, tightrope walkers who performed stunts blindfolded, and the seven-year-old boy who miraculously survived going over the falls wearing only a life jacket. The tour ends at the War Memorial, which commemorates those who served in both World Wars and the Korean War.

On this 60-minute tour, you’ll have a chance to:

  • Find out how Tesla’s alternating current system transformed Niagara into a powerhouse that still generates electricity for three million homes today
  • Discover Sir Harry Oakes’ fortune from the second-largest gold mine in North America, and the unsolved mystery of his death
  • Hear about the daredevils who performed stunts directly over the spectacular Horseshoe Falls, where six million cubic feet of water plunge over the edge every minute
  • Learn why the American Falls stopped flowing completely for 30 hours in 1848, leaving an eerie silence across the city
  • Explore the Indigenous legend of Lelawala, the heartbroken “Maid of the Mist” whose spirit lives on in the falls’ roar
  • Walk through Queen Victoria Park’s manicured gardens and hear Indigenous legends and tales of dramatic ice formations that once allowed thousands to walk across the frozen river
  • Stand where Table Rock once jutted over the gorge before its partial collapse in 1818, offering Father Hennepin his first awe-inspiring view in 1678

By the end of this tour, you’ll have heard the remarkable stories behind this spectacular sight, where nature’s power inspired revolution, daring, and enduring mystery.

My name is Mel, I've lived in Niagara Falls, Ontario Canada most of my life. My family had a small motel, in the Fallsview area, when I was growing up. I've been around tourists most of my life, I've done a bit of travelling in Europe, North America and the Caribbean. Niagara's ignited my passion for my City. It's natural beauty is spectacular, has an intriguing history, we boast world class biking and hiking trails, majestic drives, we have over 200 wineries, and Canada's loveliest own Niagara -on-lake. We have theatres, Shaw Festival, shopping, Outlet Collection, OLG Theatre at Fallsview Casino and many fabulous restaurants, like Copacabana Brazilian Steak House, Morton's Grille, Massimo's Italian Fallsview, Milestones, Magnolia Chinese Cuisine and the Skylon Tower Revolving Restaurant. There's so much to see and do in this area. Nothing really compares to all Niagara has to offer. Niagara really has something to offer to everyone!
