The Gallery of Divine Light: St Patrick’s Stained Glass Windows
About the Tour
St. Patrick’s Cathedral is more than New York’s architectural and spiritual landmark – it’s a book written in glass, stone, and light. During this indoor tour, you’ll see how St Patrick’s stained-glass windows reveal layers of biblical stories, historic events, and fables. You’ll discover how the Cathedral was conceived as a bold declaration of Catholic presence in a predominantly Protestant city, and completed in 1879 under the vision of Archbishop John Hughes.
Your journey begins at the Fifth Avenue entrance and follows the Cathedral’s perimeter, window by window, as its stories unfold through the luminous stained glass. I’ll show you how to ‘read’ the Cathedral’s visual language – saints and martyrs, symbols, and mysteries – which is crafted to instruct, inspire, and astonish.
You’ll uncover the symbolic vocabulary of Gothic architecture, with verticality suggesting transcendence, and find out why St. Patrick’s is a cathedral (not just a church).
On this hour-long tour, you’ll encounter:
- The Great Rose Window, its eight petals symbolizing eternity
- Narrative windows of the lives of St. Patrick and the Virgin Mary, unfolding across 18 glowing panels.
- The tomb of Venerable Pierre Toussaint, a Haitian-born philanthropist and candidate for sainthood
- The cardinal hats suspended from the ceiling
- The Miracle of the Roses and other legends depicted in radiant glass
- Dramatic scenes of brutal martyrdoms, such as St. Lawrence roasted alive over the flames
- The monumental Pietà by William Partridge
- The High Altar, crowned by a 57-foot bronze baldacchino – a masterpiece of sacred art
The tour concludes in the central nave, where the Cathedral’s grandeur rises in a breathtaking harmony of arches, columns, stained glass, and light. At the end of the tour, you’ll return to where you began – yet now you will have read St. Patrick’s luminous book, its secrets revealed.

My name is Iren, and I want to welcome you to New York City!
As a licensed tour guide with over 15 years of experience, I've led countless private tours, turning New York's multilayered, complicated history into stories that make the city come alive. New York's energy, ever-changing streetscapes, stunning landmarks, secret spots, and inexhaustible history create its unique tapestry.
My expertise and experience come from studying the History of Art at Harvard Extension School and New York Architectural History at Cooper Union, as well as giving hundreds of custom tours focusing on New York history and architecture.
I write a blog, CityBeatifulBlog.com, filled with stories about New York architecture, history, and incredible people who made the city what it is today. When I'm not writing or giving tours, I dance Lindy Hop - a swing dance born in Harlem, New York in the 1920s and set to infectious sounds of jazz - the best soundtrack for New York City.
When I travel (and I travel a lot!), I like exploring at my own pace, often using audio tours. I hope you'll enjoy mine!

Directions to Starting Point
The tour begins in front of St. Patrick's Cathedral, on Fifth Avenue between 50th and 51st Streets. As you listen to the introduction, I suggest crossing to the opposite side of Fifth Avenue. From there, you’ll have the best vantage point to take in the cathedral’s magnificent façade before stepping inside.
Tips
Places to stop along the way
Here are a couple of food stop I recommend:
Tartinery Café–Bar (tartinery.com) – Nestled inside the Olympic Tower (E 51st St), this chic café offers light French-inspired fare, artisanal tartines, and a relaxed bar setting just steps from St. Patrick’s Cathedral. A perfect casual stop for coffee, wine, or a quick bite. No reservations needed—it operates on a walk-in policy.
For fine dining, I recommend Duomo51 – A hidden spot on the 7th floor of the DoubleTree Hotel (25 W 51st St), offering modern Tuscan cuisine and sweeping views of St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Handmade pastas, fresh seafood, and elegant desserts make it a true Midtown gem. Reservations are highly recommended at duomo51.com.
