About the Tour

From the mystic to the spiritual, religious to supernatural, find out why this tiny village is so enchanting. This looped walking tour is best enjoyed in the dark, under brilliant night skies, but is delightful in the day as well. Listen to Naramata's fascinating history and discover magical sites while you wander under the moon and stars.

This tour begins from the eagle statue in Manitou Park, beside the parking lot, and ends in the same place. Along the way, you‘ll have a chance to:

  • Stare and wonder at Naramata's vibrant night sky
  • Learn some of the sylix people's history and stories
  • Explore Naramata's mystic, spiritual and religious history
  • Get tips for implementing Dark Sky approaches at home
  • Explore paths off the main road
  • Think deep thoughts while walking a labyrinth
  • Refresh your soul

This hike takes place on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the syilx (Okanagan) people, who have resided here since time immemorial. We recognize, honour, and respect the syilx lands, and appreciate the opportunity to learn about, and be in this special place. This tour references several of the red educational panels installed in Naramata, by the Penticton Indian Band and the Regional District of the Okanagan Similkameen. We encourage you to read them all to learn more.

This tour was narrated by Marion Barschel, written by Arnica Rowan, and produced by Terroir Consulting for Discover Naramata. Thanks to Destination BC, Wine Growers BC, the Naramata Bench Wineries Association, the Naramata Heritage Museum, and photographers Jon Adrian and Caillum Smith for the beautiful photographs. Thanks to Peach City Community Radio for providing a great recording studio.

We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Province of British Columbia through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport.

Tips

Places to stop along the way

There are plenty of spots to stop along the way.

Best time of day

If possible, do this tour in the dark! This tour is optimal for nighttime, but is also delightful in the day, and accessible year round. Note the tour does take you off the streets through the woods, so boots may be required in the winter.

Precautions

As a nighttime tour, please take along a flashlight or headlamp, in addition to your cellphone. Your cellphone's battery may be drained using it as a flashlight. Wear light coloured clothing so cars and pedestrians can see you.

Naramata is a quiet village without sidewalks. This tour leads you like a local, walking on the roads. Please take care with cars, especially at night.

This tour normally goes through the Naramata Elementary School grounds. If you are taking the tour when school is in session, a detour has been provided.
