Old Town Meander: A Mykonos Walking Tour
About the Tour
Mykonos’ Old Town is a captivating maze of narrow streets, whitewashed houses, and charming squares. On this walking tour, you’ll explore Mykonos Island’s main town, stroll along cobblestone alleys brimming with life, admire iconic white buildings with vibrant bougainvillea, and take in historical monuments.
Starting in the Old Port area at the entrance of Attica Bakeries, you’ll wander through labyrinthine alleys, admiring Mykonos’ iconic windmills and the picturesque Little Venice neighborhood with its hanging balconies. Along the way, I’ll share some of the island’s rich history, like how most of the houses in Little Venice were owned by captains who worked with pirates. There’s even a legend about people using their basement storerooms for pirate booty.
You’ll also explore Matogianni, the Old Town’s main shopping street, before strolling along the seafront to the Church of Agios Nikolaos of Kadena, where our tour ends.
During this 90-minute Mykonos walking tour, you’ll have the opportunity to:
- Take in Agia Kiriaki, one of the many privately owned churches dotted around the Old Town
- Find out how Mykonos’ narrow, winding streets were purposefully designed to work with the elements, and aren’t the result of bad planning
- Gaze upon the Church of Panagia Paraportiani, a masterpiece of Byzantine architecture combining five different churches all in one structure
- Delight in Lena’s House Folk Museum, a beautifully preserved 19th-century home showcasing traditional Mykonian furnishings and artifacts, and visit the Aegean Maritime Museum and the Mykonos Folklore Museum
- Pass by Nikos Taverna on your way to Scandinavian Bar Mykonos, a popular bar and nightclub
- See the statue of Manto Mavrogenous, a local heroine of the Greek War of Independence of 1821
- Taste baklava – a local delicacy made with filo dough, nuts, and honey – at Gioras Wood Medieval Mykonian Bakery, a bakery that’s operated for over 500 years
By the end of this tour, you won’t just have seen Mykonos Old Town – you’ll have truly experienced it. You’ll leave with a deeper understanding of the island’s rich history, a collection of captivating stories, and a newfound appreciation for the unique charm that makes Mykonos truly unforgettable.
