Flavors of Bavaria: A Food Tour in Munich with Context
About the Tour
Bavaria’s famous white sausage, Weisswurst, first saw the light of day on February 22nd, 1857. Since then, it’s become an integral part of Bavarian cuisine and the epitome of its culture. On this walking tour with food lover, chef, and Context Travel expert Stefan Hermansdorfer, you’ll go on a mouthwatering culinary journey through Munich, Bavaria’s capital.
The tour starts at Sendlinger Tor, the city gate on the fringe of the Old Town where residents often meet before visiting the surrounding bars, restaurants, and clubs. On the way to Munich’s city center, you’ll pass Julius Brantner Brothandwerk Brezelbackstube Altstadt, a bakery owned and run by a young, creative baker who’s taken the craft to a new level. You’ll also pass by Viktualienmarkt, probably the city’s most famous outdoor food market which has been operating since 1807.
As you walk, Stefan will tell you about the unfortunate coincidence that led to the invention of the Weisswurst, why you can no longer order it in any real Bavarian restaurant after noon, and how to make it yourself. En route to Weinbar Griabig, a popular wine bar and our final stop, I’ll show you a detour to Bar Centrale, Munich’s most Italian restaurant, where you can end the tour on a sweet note with a tiny tiramisu.
On this Munich tour, you’ll have a chance to:
- Taste the best, butteriest, and crunchiest croissant outside of France
- Learn about how food in Bavaria is also all about the right beer pairing, and find out which beer gardens serve what as you pass the historical Hofbräuhaus beer hall
- See Heilig Geist, a Catholic church with a mural that includes a painted pretzel on its ceiling
- Discover why there are so many Italian restaurants in Munich and why it was once known as the northernmost city of Italy
- Drink the best coffee in the city at Kaffeerösterei Viktualienmarkt – for which it’s worth standing in line
- Stroll past Zum Alten Markt, a Neo-Bavarian restaurant known for its innovative, seasonal take on regional classics
After this 90-minute culinary journey through Munich, you’ll have a deeper insight into Bavarian cuisine. You’ll also have learned that, despite all the centuries-old traditions, Bavarian culture doesn’t close itself off from modernity.
I wish you a good appetite!
