Island, Gateway and Empire: A Colaba Walking Tour
About the Tour
Mumbai's Colaba district packs centuries of history into a compact stretch of coastline, colonial architecture, and street-market chaos. On this walking tour, you'll trace the area's story from a British imperial showpiece to an independent nation's cultural heart. You'll also discover the everyday institutions – from tiffin-tin delivery networks to legendary café haunts – that make this corner of the city tick.
The tour starts at the Gateway of India, the 1924 basalt arch built to mark King George V's coronation visit, though he never actually walked through it. From there, you'll pass the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, built in 1903 and still Mumbai's most storied address, before turning into the pavement stalls of Colaba Causeway, where vendors sell everything from silk scarves to suspicious designer watches. The tour continues past the art deco Regal Cinema and along the edge of the Oval Maidan, where cricket matches play out in the shadow of Gothic law courts and the University of Mumbai.
You'll follow Maharishi Karvi Road toward Churchgate Railway Station, whose name recalls the long-demolished gate of Mumbai's old fort, and learn how the city's legendary dabbawallahs meet on the street outside of its platforms as a sorting hub for thousands of home-cooked lunches. The tour ends on Marine Drive, the sweeping seafront promenade overlooking Back Bay, with views stretching from Nariman Point to Chowpatty Beach.
On this 45-minute tour, you'll have a chance to:
- Hear how the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel survived the 2008 terrorist attacks and reclaimed its status as India's premier hotel
- Browse stalls along Colaba Causeway, including side alleys off Henry Road, for souvenirs, jewellery, and street snacks
- Stop at Leopold's Café, open since 1871 and immortalised in Gregory David Roberts' novel Shantaram
- Learn why Colaba's streets feel calmer than most Indian cities – auto-rickshaws are banned here
- Spot the Rajabai Tower, an 1878 clock tower modelled on the Palace of Westminster
- Discover the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, Mumbai's main history museum, housed in a domed Gothic building
Lace up your walking shoes and let Mumbai's most storied neighbourhood unfold at a pleasantly unhurried pace.

Directions to Starting Point
The tour starts just outside the Gateway of India monument. The first thing to do is pass through the security entrance of the monument and then join me beside the statue of Swami Vivekanada, which is to your left after you enter.
I will briefly introduce the route and how VoiceMap works and then tell you more about the monument as the tour begins. The best way to get to this point easily and safely is take a taxi from your hotel.
Tips
Places to stop along the way
This is a tour to absorb the vibrancy of Colaba, enjoy art deco buildings and meet the dabbawallas. Along the way, I'll point out cafes to stop for a coffee or return to for a bite to eat. Leopold's and Mondegar's along Colaba Causeway are always reliable favourites.
Best time of day
This tour can be taken at any time of day. The Colaba market stalls tend to open mid-to-late morning and the dabbawallas congregate near Churchgate Railway Station from 11am-12 noon. The key aim of this walk is to bring to life the area and its history and give a few ideas and places to head back to for shopping, eating, drinking and culture.
Precautions
The tour route is easy, on the flat for two miles or around three kilometres. The pavements can be crowded at the busier times of the market or around the dabbawallas. Take care when crossing roads and always use crossings. It can also get hot in Mumbai so take a hat, water and sunscreen and wear trainers or walking shoes.
