About the Tour

This Historical Highlights of the Mission Area in Carmel-by-the-Sea is a collaboration by Lynn Momboisse and Carmel Cares founder Dale Byrne. It covers Carmel-by-the-Sea’s three mission areas: Mission Ranch, Carmel Mission Basilica, and the Mission Trail Nature Preserve.

Our tour begins and ends at the Mission Ranch Hotel, owned by actor and former mayor of Carmel, Clint Eastwood. From there, we’ll wind our way through the southern end of this charming village to the Mission Basilica, and then on to the Mission Trail Nature Preserve.

On this tour, you’ll hear about:

  • Early Native American history
  • The founders of Carmel-by-the-Sea, and its origins
  • The story of how the Carmel Mission came to be
  • Famous Carmel houses and hotels
  • A handful of Carmel’s most interesting residents
  • Mission Trail Park’s beginnings, as well as the habitats and flora found there today

This two-hour walking tour is two miles long.

Please note: This tour does not include a visit to the interior of the Mission Basilica. To access the Basilica, its five museums, cemetery and courtyard grounds, purchase a ticket inside the Gift Store.

Hi! My name is Lynn. I am a native of California and have resided in Northern California for most of my life. I have a love for discovering the hidden treasures in my own back yard. For many years I lived in beautiful Carmel-by-the-Sea where I co-authored the book Historic Homes and Inns of Carmel-by-the-Sea. During my time in Carmel-by-the Sea, I served on the Carmel Heritage Society, and Historic Resources Board. My love of history and passion for discovering the beauty of the Golden State has led me to create a fun little blog titled "Adventures of a Home Town Tourist" where I recount many of my walking tours and hiking adventures throughout the world. I currently live in the majestic Sierra Foothills and have written several walking and driving tours of the Lake Tahoe area as well as the California Gold Country. I am so excited to continue to share my travel adventures through the power of VoiceMap. I can't wait for you to join me. Happy Adventures!

The hotels are open to the public so feel free to stop in their lobby and pick up a brochure for a future trip. There are no sidewalks on this tour, so walk as close to the house side of the street as possible. Use caution when crossing the street, and watch for uneven ground and low hanging tree limbs when walking. When you come to intersections, make sure that any cars coming your way see you and have stopped. Just be mindful of your surroundings as you enjoy this beautiful Carmel by the Sea Mission Area Walking Tour.

RESTROOMS
There is a restroom at the Mission Ranch Dining Room for patrons.

There are two public restrooms near the starting point at Mission Ranch. The closest is located in the parking lot of the Carmel River State Beach at the intersection of Carmelo Street and Scenic Road. The second option is at the southern end of Carmel Beach located at the intersection of Scenic Road and Santa Lucia. The restroom is on the beach side of the Scenic Road.

WEATHER
Depending on the time of year you are taking this tour you will have different kinds of weather and different kinds of views and experiences. During our summer months May through August the weather can be quite foggy. This may mean that you may not see as far along the coast as you would on clear days. During the early spring, March to April and fall, September to October the weather here is often crystal clear. At this time you will most certainly have a stellar view just about everywhere on the coast. Both foggy days and clear days are quite fantastic, just each in their own way.

USING VOICEMAP
If you use your phone to take pictures along your walk, note that using the video setting will shut down the VoiceMap app and you will need to restart the tour.

When using VoiceMap with ear buds, it is not necessary that you have your phone out of your bag. But we have found that having your phone in front of you during these tours helps visitors stay on track. In map mode, there will be a blue dot on the map showing your location at all times. If you venture off the course you may use the blue dot to assist you getting back on the tour path. The blue dot will show your position in relation to the tour as well as upcoming stops that will trigger related audio content.

You can skip parts of the tour by clicking on the point you want to jump to or ending the tour by clicking on the arrow in the top right corner and restarting at a later time using the Resume button. We suggest you select the Settings option on the lower right and make sure the Distance is set to yards/miles, the Tour Player Autolock to Off and Audio Lost Alert to Off.
