The Great Fire of 1724: A Woburn Walking Tour
About the Tour
Woburn is a historical and unique Georgian gem in Bedfordshire, famous for its abbey and Safari Park. On this walking tour voiced by local lad John, you’ll trace the events of the Great Woburn Fire that occurred 300 years ago and hear how the town rose from the ashes.
The tour starts outside the Woburn Hotel’s stable yard in Park Street Car Park. From there, you’ll dive into this coaching town’s history. You’ll hear about the pleas of past villagers following the Great Fire of 1724 and how they recovered from it. As you make your way to the Woburn Heritage Museum where the tour ends, you’ll explore the Market Place, hear the story behind old St Mary and unlock the secrets of the 'mix-tape' of Woburn's buildings.
On this 45-minute tour, you’ll:
- Travel through 300 years of history from the town’s scorching to its re-birth
- Take in the Abbey, the old Town Hall (now the Zoohause Woburn), and several historical pubs including the Bell and Black Horse
- Discover the hidden inns and easily-missed historical spots
- Learn where Guy Fawkes stayed when he visited
- Find out the secret life of our village and how it became the place it is today
Join us in fair weather (or otherwise) to celebrate the 300th anniversary of Woburn burning!
