Miami Beach: A Sunny Stroll through its History and Architecture
About the Tour
Miami Beach hasn’t always been the glamorous tourist destination it is today. Less than 150 years ago, it barely existed at all.
This walking tour starts at the Miami Beach sign and follows the beachfront before turning onto Ocean Drive. Along the way, you’ll hear all kinds of stories, including how Julia Tuttle persuaded Henry Flagler to extend his railroad south, helping spark the development of Miami and Miami Beach.
From Ocean Drive, you’ll head inland through Collins Avenue, home to Miami’s oldest bar, Mac’s Club Deuce, and Washington Avenue, where you’ll see the Old Clay Hotel. As you walk, you’ll see how Miami Beach has repeatedly reinvented itself – from a 1920s holiday playground, to a World War II military base, to a fading retirement spot, and eventually into the neon-lit destination it’s known as today. The tour ends on Española Way.
On this 60 minute walk, you’ll have a chance to:
- Take a look at the Colony Hotel’s steel corner windows and neon marquee, a design that helped define the Streamline Moderne look on Ocean Drive
- Stand outside the Versace Mansion, where Gianni Versace was shot on the front steps in 1997
- Hear how Ocean Drive’s Art Deco hotels were once repurposed as military barracks during World War II
- Stop by the 13th Street Lifeguard Tower, one of the most photographed on the beach
- Visit Mac’s Club Deuce, Miami Beach’s oldest bar, which has changed very little since 1964
- Learn how Al Capone ran gambling operations from what is now Esmé Miami Beach
Few cities have reinvented themselves as dramatically as Miami Beach. This tour shows you exactly how it happened.

Jocelyn Woods
Hello my name is Jocelyn. I am originally from Canada, but I've moved around a bit and for the last few years I have been in the Netherlands. That really gave me the chance to discover my interest in history, since I got the oppertunity to visit many new cities and museums.
I have been guiding in multiple cities for the last few years. I work for a couple different guiding comapnies part time while following my studies in Informatics, which is totally unrelated I know. I like to call my guiding work a hobby that grew out of control, but I have to say I definelty love the job. I was really excited to get started with VoiceMap and to have the chance to share some of my favourite stories with an even wider audience.

Tips
Places to stop along the way
If you want to grab a quick meal along the way I recommend La Sandwicherie. Their sandwiches are delicious and the prices are not so bad for on Miami Beach.
If you need a toilet at any point there are public toilets along the beach every few streets. There is one on 6th, 10th, and 14th that are all kind of close to the tour.
For the rest. look at my last tour stop for my suggestions not along the route.
And other than that I would say if you want a drink, stop at any of the hotels and check out their happy hour specials. I have to say I haven't gotten a really great cocktail at any of them, but if you need a break from the sun, it is a classic Miami Beach experience.
Best time of day
I think this tour is okay at any time, but I would say in the morning is best. Then the sun isn't quite as strong as in the afternoon, and there will be less partiers than in the evenings.
Precautions
This tour will be outside the entire hour, and there isn't so much shade so make sure you have some water and sunscreen with you.
Also, you will be walking along busy streets so keep an eye out for traffic as you walk.
And, probably obvious, but don't play the tour so loud that you can't hear whats happening around you.
