Merano Walking Tour: A Little Alpine Paradise in South Tyrol
About the Tour
The beautiful city of Merano sits at a crossroads between Austria and Italy, where Alpine landscapes meet Mediterranean warmth.
On this walking tour, you’ll see how eight centuries of history played out across promenades, arcaded streets, and spa-era architecture. You’ll trace the city’s transformation from medieval trading capital to aristocratic retreat, and discover how Empress Elisabeth of Austria and a visionary spa doctor turned a quiet Tyrolean town into one of Europe’s most fashionable resorts.
The tour starts at Elisabeth Park. You’ll see the marble statue of ‘Sissi’ that marks the spot where the empress’ visits in the 1870s and 1880s sparked a wave of aristocratic tourism that reshaped the city.
Descending into the old town, you’ll walk through Laubengasse, a 400-metre covered arcade built in the 1200s that served as Merano’s commercial heart for over 800 years. The tour ends at the Kurhaus, the city’s iconic Art Nouveau spa house, whose gilded Kursaal and domed rotunda still host concerts, balls, and the internationally renowned Merano Wine Festival.
On this 75-minute tour, you’ll have a chance to:
- Spot the three surviving medieval city gates that once controlled all trade entering Merano
- Climb the Powder Tower, the last remnant of 13th-century Ortenstein Castle, for panoramic views over the Adige Valley
- Follow the Passer River promenades and pass the Wandelhalle, a glass-and-arch promenade hall where guests would breathe the healing air in the 1800s
- Discover how the Passeirer Gate connected the city walls to the valley routes north
- Admire the Gothic Parish Church of St. Nicholas, with its 78-metre bell tower and richly decorated stained glass windows
- Climb to the Tappeinerweg, a three-kilometre high-altitude trail funded by spa doctor Franz Tappeiner, and follow it for a short while
- Learn how Rennweg earned its name from the medieval jousting tournaments once held along its route
- Visit Teatro Puccini, an Art Nouveau gem inaugurated in 1900 with a performance of Goethe’s Faust
Merano rewards the curious. This tour gives you the stories and the perfect route to explore it all – and to enjoy perfect panoramic views of the city.
