About the Tour

This Intrepid Drive takes you through the very best of the Macedon and Daylesford regions. You’ll discover the nature and history of Hanging Rock and Trentham Falls along the way, as well as the villages of Kyneton, Trentham and Daylesford. You meet five amazing local producers too.

Our Intrepid Drive starts on the Calder Freeway near the Calder Park Motor Racing Circuit, but we don't spend long on the freeway. Instead we head off on country roads – with a couple of graded but unsealed sections – to discover the finest local produce and the stories behind the producers.

You'll get all the directions you need once you’re en route, included in the commentary, which plays automatically as you drive along. There are fuel and food stops available along the way in Kyneton, Trentham or the finish point of Daylesford, where we encourage you to take the time to do some of your own exploring and maybe track down some of the tips our locals have given you.

This is intended an all day experience, and the 120 minutes displayed by VoiceMap is just an approximate driving time. It doesn't include all the stops along the way, which are an essential part of the overall experience. You're welcome to end and resume the tour at any point.

The other option is to pair your Intrepid Drive with a stay along the way in either Kyneton, Trentham or Daylesford where there are lots of character-filled options for all budgets.

Getting There

Route Overview

VoiceMap tours follow a route from a set starting point. It’s how we give turn-by-turn directions and tell a story greater than the sum of its parts.
  1. Total distance
    134km
  2. Distance back to start location
    63km

Directions to Starting Point

The tour starts in the car park of the BP Truckstop, 937 Calder Fwy, Cnr Holden Rd, Calder Park VIC 3037. If heading towards Bendigo from Melbourne, you can't miss it as it is the only major services stop on the route and located just after the Calder Park Motor Racing Park, a landmark in itself. If you aren't familiar with directions in Melbourne, simply hit the "Directions" tab in the App when on the tour page and it will connect to the phone maps App and direct you there. The start point is a good place to check you've got enough fuel for today's drive.

Tips

Places to stop along the way

We've highlighted four amazing producers of incredible regional produce who have experiences and opportunities to purchase their wares outside of the car.

There are also two beautiful nature spots to enjoy. In Daylesford, our locals have offered up a trove of tips to help you explore. If you want want to visit the restaurants of host Jodie Flockhart (Sault Restaurant) or Daylesford local interviewee, Ella Wolf-Tasker (The Lake House), you'll need to book well in advance and likely time your drive to fit your reservation rather than the other way around. They are insanely popular – and for good reason!

If dining up in Daylesford, we'd also recommend booking accommodation for the night in the town.

Best time of day

To get the optimal experience both inside and outside the car, we recommend a reasonably early start on either a Friday or Saturday. Aim to arrive at the start point by 9.30am to hit up the opening of the first local producer, Hanging Rock Winery just after opening.

Precautions

We don't recommend attempting this drive at night. The producers will all be closed and there is the added danger of wildlife on the roads. The same applies for dawn and dusk light. Drive with caution at these times.

In winter, some of the roads are prone to frost and Mt. Macedon's weather can be totally different to the rest of the region's. Always drive to the conditions around you. Please never handle your phone when driving. It's both dangerous and illegal.

If you are the driver, please monitor your alcohol intake when stopping at the winery and distillery. It's a much better idea to purchase something to enjoy at the end of the driving day.

“Great app. walk around at your own pace, stop where you want, move on or speed up when you want. Read the script before you go or during the commentary, speed it up or replay it. Repeat the tour whenever you like.”
