Maumee’s Landmarks: A Guide to the Charming Riverside City’s Heritage
About the Tour
Picturesque Maumee is a vibrant river town that’s been shaped by a rich history, where every corner has a tale waiting to be shared. On this walking tour, you’ll hear the stories behind historic homes and buildings that have withstood the test of time, each a silent witness to the evolution of the city.
The tour starts on East Wayne Street in front of the charming Federal Inn. From there, you’ll make your way down to the mighty Maumee River and hear about the area’s early history. As you pass the Governor’s Inn, I’ll tell you about the former 1930s bordello’s colorful past, and how it’s now home to eerie spirits with a knack for stealing sips of whiskey.
You’ll weave through the heart of Maumee, with its captivating blend of old-world charm and modern vibrancy, and I’ll point out architectural features that reflect the styles of yesteryear. I’ll also share some intriguing stories about the families who called these historic residences home. The tour ends back at the Federal Inn.
Along the way, you’ll have a chance to:
- See one of the first Catholic parishes in Northwest Ohio, Saint Joseph Catholic Church, founded by German immigrants in 1828
- Learn how this city has been known as the Foot of the Rapids, Maumee City, South Toledo, and how it finally became known as Maumee as you stroll through Towpath Park
- Find out why St Paul’s Episcopal Church, one of Ohio’s oldest Gothic Revival structures, had to have its belltower removed in the early 1880s
- Follow the Maumee River and learn how Ottawa and Wyandot villages and their burial grounds were scattered along the banks of the Maumee
- Explore Uptown Maumee and discover everything it offers, from delicious food and unique gifts to cigars and fresh chocolates
By the end of this 60-minute walking tour through historic streets, Maumee will have captivated your imagination with its tales of the past. You’ll also have deepened your appreciation for the heritage that’s shaped this community into the gem it is today.

Tips
Places to stop along the way
I recommend four stops, including The Village Idiot, for its pizza, cold beer, and ambiance. Just up the road is The Cigar Affair, a great place to lounge and enjoy a cigar, inside or in their garden lounge. Across the street is Dale's; you can't go wrong with anything on the menu at this relaxed and casual neighborhood bar. For dessert, I highly recommend Maumee Valley Chocolates and Candy. And don't forget about the shopping. Uptown Maumee features many shops and boutiques you won't find anywhere else.
Best time of day
Mornings and afternoons are a great time for this walking tour. Summer evenings are nice too.
Precautions
You may not want to lug around a large camera on this stroll, but certainly, bring along your phone to take some shots to share.
