Mar del Plata: History of the Rambla and the City
About the Tour
Walking Mar del Plata’s coastal path is an activity that people have done since the city’s foundation.
On this walking tour from the area of Varese to the northern beach of La Perla, you’ll hear about the history of the city and how it's in dialogue with important facts about Argentina. I’ll also show you iconic buildings that witnessed part of this history.
This walking tour starts at the Edificio Acuarela, one of the last works of Argentinian architect Clorindo Testa, and ends at Balneario La Perla, another of his creations. Along the way, you‘ll discover how the city was founded, and how it transformed from an elite tourist destination to a very popular vacation city during the Argentinian summer.
You‘ll also hear about the iconic building Mirador Cabo Corrientes. The tour ends close to the sculpture that marks the place where the marvelous poet Alfonsina Storni committed suicide by entering the sea.
On this 60-minute walking tour, you‘ll have the chance to:
- Hear the story of Torreón del Monje, a medieval-style building with a fascinating story
- Learn about two works by Clorindo Testa: the Acuarela building and Balneario La Perla
- Discover the history of Mar del Plata as a popular tourist destination and the history of its iconic ramblas
- Appreciate interesting facts about Mirador Cabo Corrientes and his more than 500 apartments with sea views
- Get your selfie photo in the newest Mar del Plata postal point
- Hear about the place where the poet Alfonsina Storni ended her pain into the sea
Join me for this meander around the sea coast to learn a bit about the happy city.
Tour Producer
Araceli
My name is Araceli. I design and produce self-guided tours shaped by field research and urban exploration. I was born in Greater Buenos Aires, and from the age of five my dream was to live in the City of Buenos Aires — a dream I fulfilled in my early youth (long ago and far away!).
I firmly believe — without any scientifically rigorous or remotely “objective” evidence — that Buenos Aires is the best city in the world. In my whimsical ranking of cities, Mar del Plata proudly holds second place. I should add that the ranking ends there; all other cities drift somewhere in a vast and undefined third place.
My work focuses on oral storytelling and urban cultural heritage. I explore themes related to Argentine culture, art, and history, and I am interested in cities, people, everyday stories, music, cinema, and visual art. Through my audio walks, I aim to share a way of seeing the world shaped by these curiosities, from Buenos Aires.
I imagine my listeners as curious people, unhurried wanderers — from Argentina, across Latin America, and around the world — who find in my stories a way to explore the city of Buenos Aires at their own pace, whenever our interests align: places, characters, and moments that deserve dedicated storytelling, attention, and discovery, expanding the way we see the world.

Directions to Starting Point
The tour begins in front of the Edificio Acuarela, on the corner of Bernardo de Irigoyen street and Avenida Patricio Peralta Ramos.
If you use public transport, several bus lines will bring you close to this spot.
Alternatively, you might be within walking distance from the city center or the Varese area.
Finally, if you're coming by car, keep in mind that it's difficult to find parking on Patricio Peralta Ramos Avenue; it's probably better to park on the nearby streets.
Tips
Places to stop along the way
If you decide to continue the walk after our last stop, heading north, you'll find the Museo MAR, which is Museum of Contemporary Art of Mar del Plata. It's approximately a 30-minute walk from Balneario La Perla. I recommend checking the opening hours and exhibitions beforehand, although you can always stop by to see the giant sea lion sculpture made of Mar del Plata alfajores by artist Marta Minujín, which is located outside the museum.
Best time of day
Best time to do this tour would be during the morning when the area is less crowded and less noisy.
Of course, you could choose to do it in the afternoon. If so, make sure to bring sunglasses to be more confortable as you will have the sun right in front of you.
Precautions
Bring a hat to protect from the sun and always beware of pickpockets. Never happened anything to me in this area, it is safe, but during the season can be very crowded.
