Spooks and Specters: A Tour of Madrid, New Mexico’s Ghost Town
About the Tour
Madrid, New Mexico is experiencing its second coming as an iconoclastic artistic village. But, years after its historical coal-mining days, a few former residents continue to haunt the resurrected ghost town.
On this walking tour produced by author Andrew Wice, you’ll hear supernatural stories from the people who experienced them, in the spots where they actually occurred.
The tour starts in the parking lot between Madrid’s general store, Old Boarding House Mercantile, and the Trading Bird Gallery, a turquoise shop. As you stroll down the main road to the tour’s final stop near Gypsy Plaza, I’ll show you all the buildings that are said to be haunted. You’ll hear about the frequently-seen frightened and frightening red-headed girl in one basement, stand in the spot where a full-bodied apparition was witnessed, and learn about a particularly malevolent and predatory spirit known as The Croucher who pops up at various places on the tour.
During this hour-long tour, you’ll also have a chance to:
- Hear about the good, the bad, and the pure evil that lurk in the shadowy corners of the Mine Shaft Tavern & Cantina, a classic roadhouse with a documented history of specters
- See the most haunted house in Madrid, complete with “Death Stairs”, as confirmed by witnesses
- Pass by Java Junction, a café with a quaint upstairs lodging that’s always occupied by something, even when there are no living guests
- Find out why the Engine House Theater, a restored concert hall, is rumored to be the black heart of supernatural disturbances for the entire town
- Spot the orbs and shadowy figures that have been reported throughout Old Boarding House Mercantile
These paranormal accounts are presented in a clear, objective way without any editorializing. Listeners get to decide what they believe, after hearing the ghost stories in the actual spots where they happened.
This walking tour is appropriate for all ages and takes about one hour.
