Walking Wandsworth: A Riverside Stroll between Putney and Battersea
About the Tour
The riverside villages of Putney, Wandsworth and Battersea form a key part of the Thames’ two thousand-year-old history. On this walking tour, you’ll hear about the area’s development since the Middle Ages, and how these villages tell a story about leisure and enjoyment replacing industry and hard graft.
The tour starts outside Putney’s St Mary’s Church, a site of Christian worship since the 13th century. You’ll stroll along parts of Putney Wharf, which has a long history associated with the brewing trade. From there, you’ll follow the riverside path and see some of the Thames’ most iconic bridges.
Along the way, you’ll hear stories about local landmarks and some of the people who have called this waterside area home. The tour leads into the magnificent Battersea Park, where you’ll find out how it played a part in bringing colour and excitement to drab post-war Britain for a single year. The tour ends in the park, next to the London Peace Pagoda.
Along the way, you’ll also have a chance to:
- Hear how local Thomas Cromwell rose from humble beginnings to become the most powerful and divisive man in Tudor England
- Listen to the history that predates the medieval and even the Roman occupation of the riverside
- See how areas and streets based on toil and sweat have been transformed into places of leisure and modern living
- Visit the last resting place of Benedict Arnold, one of America’s most despised sons
- Find out how military correctness nearly destroyed an iconic London landmark
- Walk through the area that was popular with artists and writers in the 1800s and 1900s
- Get to know why Wandsworth became a mecca for the ballooning pioneers of the 1800s
- Be enthralled by tales of murder, riot and self-sacrifice
By the end of this 90-minute walk, you’ll have travelled through over two thousand years of history, and seen why this has become one of the most important areas along the Thames.
Tour Producer
Steve Matthews
I’ve been guiding in London since 2010, and in that time I’ve led thousands of people through the backstreets, river paths, and half‑forgotten corners that rarely make it into the guidebooks. My work is rooted in years of on‑the‑ground experience, a lot of digging through old maps and archives, and a genuine fascination with how London’s past still shapes the city we walk through today.
What began as a hobby has grown into a long‑standing practice of researching local history — from lost streets and vanished industries to the characters who left their mark on the place. I keep my tours updated with new findings, fresh angles, and the odd surprising detail that brings a street or story to life.
I specialise in the parts of London people often overlook, helping visitors and locals alike see the echoes and footprints hidden in plain sight. My aim is simple: to share the stories I’ve gathered over the years with accuracy, enthusiasm, and a real affection for this endlessly surprising city. Whether you’re joining me for the first time or returning for another walk, you can expect a well‑researched, engaging, and reliable tour shaped by more than a decade of experience.

Tips
Places to stop along the way
The tour is mainly observational, but there are two lovely churches that you can visit, both called St Mary's. One is at the start of the tour and the other is in Battersea. Please check their opening times. There are plenty of seating areas along the route, so if you feel like pausing the tour to take in the views or eat something you've brought with you, then you'll have lots of choices. Battersea park at the end of the tour gives you an opportunity to explore this beautiful green open space. As far as refreshments are concerned Putney High Street has many take aways to offer and there are several pubs around Putney Wharf. If you just want to grab a coffee then try The Dynamo on Putney Bridge Road, you'll walk past it during the tour. It's open from 7:30 am except for Sundays when it opens an hour later.
I would recommend stopping at the Ship roughly half way along the route, As you walk through the new riverside developments in Wandsworth and Battersea there are a number of bars and restaurants.
Best time of day
The tour can be walked from 7 am to 7 pm to give you a chance to explore Battersea Park whose gates close at 10 pm. Because the route is predominantly pedestrianised traffic congestion during rush hour isn't really a factor although using transport networks to get to the start point will be more crowded between 8-9 am and 4-6 pm.
Precautions
You'll be travelling through mainly residential and commercial areas, so there are usually people around day and night. The route is popular with walkers and cyclists so you won't encounter large stretches without seeing anyone. As usual take the necessary precautions in keeping bags, phones and cameras safe.
