South Bank Walking Tour: London's Escape From Its Own Rules
About the Tour
London's South Bank has long been the city's playground, sitting outside the strict laws of the City of London. On this walking tour, you'll trace the area's rowdy history, from Shakespeare's Globe Theatre to today's skate parks, once free from official control.
The tour starts at the Southwark Gateway needle, a stone spike marking the alignment of the medieval London Bridge. You'll wander through Borough Market, London's oldest food market, past Southwark Cathedral and the Golden Hind replica ship, then along Bankside, once notorious for brothels and bear-baiting, to the reconstructed Globe Theatre, where Shakespeare's plays first thrilled Elizabethan audiences.
You'll pass the Clink Prison Museum, built on the site of a medieval jail that gave English its slang for incarceration, and Tate Modern, a former power station turned world-class art gallery. Further along, you'll discover Jubilee Gardens, the London Eye, and Waterloo Bridge's darker secrets, including a Cold War assassination by poisoned umbrella. The tour ends beneath Big Ben, London's most photographed landmark.
On this 90-minute walking tour, you'll have a chance to:
- Explore the ruins of Winchester Palace, once home to the powerful Bishops of Winchester for over 500 years
- Learn how The Anchor pub hid fugitives from the nearby Clink Prison in its old cubby holes
- Discover how Doggett's Coat and Badge pub commemorates Britain's oldest annually contested sporting race
- See the OXO Tower's stained-glass letters, a clever trick to dodge 1920s neon advertising laws
- Wander through Gabriel's Wharf and the Bernie Spain Gardens, saved from development by local campaigners in the 1980s
- Hear how the Royal Festival Hall became Britain's first post-war building awarded Grade I listed status
- Discover the South Bank Lion, a rare surviving example of nineteenth-century artificial Coade stone
From medieval prisons to modern masterpieces, this walk uncovers the South Bank's unruly, unforgettable character. Lace up your shoes and see where London went to misbehave.

London isn’t just where I live - it’s in my bones. I’ve spent nearly my entire life in South London, and that lifelong connection shapes every step of the tours I lead. For me, this isn’t just the “best city in the world” (though I stand by that wholeheartedly); it’s a living storybook, layered with voices, moments, and histories I’ve grown up hearing, exploring, and sharing.
My ties to London run generations deep. My grandfathers served here during the Blitz - one on anti-aircraft guns, the other as a volunteer fireman - protecting these very streets while carrying on their daily lives. Those family stories sparked a lasting fascination with the human side of history: the lives behind the landmarks, the drama, resilience, and character you simply won’t find on a plaque.
I’ve been working in London since the mid-1990s, guiding people through its most iconic buildings and hidden corners. Years of fantastic feedback led me to create these tours so more people could experience the city the way I know it. Join me, and you’ll get more than facts. What you can expect isn’t just history, but a lively blend of insider knowledge, untold stories, and a good dose of humour. Join me, and I’ll show you a London you won’t find in guidebooks - one that’s personal, surprising, and unforgettable.

Directions to Starting Point
The tour starts at the the southern end of London Bridge. This is outside of the area controlled by the city of London and heads along the Southbank through what has historically been the more relaxed side of London.
The start location is easily reached from London Bridge station with both train and tube services and is also the end point for several of my other tours allowing you to link these tours together to create a longer walk.
Tips
Places to stop along the way
There are many places to stop the tour for some refreshment. Especially during the summer most of the route is well served by outdoor bars and pop up food stalls as well as more formal restaurants and pubs.
Borough Market especially during the weekend is a good place to find food from all corners of the world to keep your energy levels up.
Best time of day
The route is open 24 hours a day however the attractions on site are only open during the day. As such this tour is best taken during the day when you can see all the locations we will be visiting.
Precautions
The Southbank area has cleaned up over the last 20 years and is now a busy area with lots of people during the day and into the evening. As with all big cities it does pay to keep your wits about you. Some of the areas can get congested and in some places the route does get quite narrow so be prepared to wait and take your time.
There are some steps at the start and end of the tour otherwise the route is mostly flat.
