Rock ‘n’ Roll London: A Magical Music Tour through Soho and Mayfair
About the Tour
From the early days of The Rolling Stones and The Beatles, to The Clash’s rebellious anthems and David Bowie’s pioneering sounds, London is a living, breathing monument to Rock ‘n’ Roll.
On this walking tour, I’ll guide you to places where the echoes of iconic guitar riffs and legendary lyrics reverberate through the streets. You’ll hear the stories behind iconic music venues, and gain insight into how the city influenced the world’s music scene during the 1900s.
The tour starts at Centre Point Tottenham Court Road Square Plaza, from where I’ll take you on an exhilarating journey through the heart of the city that gave birth to some of the most influential musicians in history. I’ll show you Ronnie Scott’s, where iconic jazz performers Chet Baker and Ella Fitzgerald once performed. You’ll stroll down Carnaby Street, one of the most fashionable streets in London during the swinging sixties, where the likes of The Who used to do their shopping.
You’ll visit hallowed grounds that were launchpads for countless rock legends, including 100 Club, the oldest independent music venue in the world. You’ll hear fascinating stories of wild nights, groundbreaking performances, and the cultural impact that these musical icons left on the world. The tour ends at White Cube Mason’s Yard art gallery (formerly Indica Gallery) where John Lennon first set eyes on a little-known performance artist named Yoko Ono.
Along the way, you’ll have a chance to:
- Visit Denmark Street, where The Rolling Stones recorded their first album
- Hear how Jeffrey Bernard, the famous journalist and barfly, fell asleep in a toilet stall at the Coach & Horses
- See the spots where David Bowie and The Rolling Stones held their first public gigs, and Cliff Richard had his first public performance
- Visit the former site of the revolutionary Trident Studios, where Queen recorded their early albums
- Discover the Scotch of St James, the club where Jimi Hendrix made his first UK appearance
- Pass the London Palladium, where the Beatles headlined in 1963, giving rise to the phrase “Beatlemania”
By the end of this tour, you’ll have explored two very different parts of London: the quirky, almost bohemian area of Soho, and the sophisticated and elegant area of Mayfair. You’ll also have an insight into this city’s tremendous diversity, and how it shaped the world’s music scene.

Talk the Walk
I’m Ian Grover and for many years it’s been my pleasure to guide visitors around London and throughout the British Isles. As well as the iconic sights, I delight in showing the hidden gems that many people miss.
My background was centred around the automotive industry when in 1980 I started work as a trainee car salesman with Renault UK Ltd. Over the coming years I progressed to sales management with Mercedes-Benz and finally ended up with the splendidly sounding title of Personal Liaison Manager, responsible for UK sales of their two flagship models. These were the ultra-luxurious Maybach, and a 300 km/h supercar called the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. When these two programmes came to an end I decided to take a different path in life and do something that I had always had a passion for and I became a tour guide.
I went to the University of Westminster in London where, after comprehensive training, I qualified with distinction as a City of Westminster Tour Guide, Since then, over the past years I have delivered both walking tours of London and driving tours throughout the British Isles and this is something that I still enjoy immensely.
In addition to my physical tours, through my Talk the Walk profile on VoiceMap, I'm now focussed on producing engaging audio tours so that travellers can explore with me in their own time and at their own pace.

Tips
Places to stop along the way
If you feel like taking a break, along the way you could stop at the iconic Bar Italia which has been serving food and drinks since 1949 and is still in the same family hands today. Perhaps you might like traditional fish and chips in the excellent Poppie's Fish and Chips Bar. If a traditional pub is more your scene then a stop at the legendary Coach and Horses pub in Soho would be a good idea.
Best time of day
The tour can be taken between 07:00 and 19:00 Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 19:00 on Saturday and 10:00 to 18:00 on Sunday. For maximum enjoyment I would recommend that this is best done during daylight hours.
Precautions
The areas of London through which you will be walking are generally very safe. Like all big cities though it's always a good idea to be aware of the possibility of pickpockets. Be particularly aware around busy areas such as stations, bus stops or crowded shopping areas.
