Pop Goes The Weasel: A Historical Walk from Angel to Moorgate
About the Tour
A strange title, you say? Perhaps. But on this walking tour, you’ll discover that the area just northwest of the City of London has deep and playful ties to the famous nursery rhyme – from tuppeny rice, treacle, and of course, that elusive weasel. You’ll find out its meaning… and why exactly it goes POP!
Starting at Angel Underground Station, you’ll instantly see why this junction was a buzzing epicentre of long-distance travel, filled with stagecoaches and travellers in the 1700s and 1800s. Dickens himself believed this was where “London began in earnest,” thanks to two famed coaching inns. From there, you’ll pass through elegant Georgian Myddelton Square before stopping by the world-renowned Sadler’s Wells Theatre.
Rejoining the City Road, you’ll hear tales of bygone industries, pioneering medical advances, and the area’s colourful past residents. You’ll follow in the footsteps of evangelist John Wesley and visit the burial ground synonymous with Methodism. You’ll reach the City of London’s northernmost edge, where you’ll discover how this area offered shelter to those displaced by the Great Fire of 1666, before ending the tour at Moorgate Underground Station.
Along the way, you’ll also have a chance to:
- Hear how the area known as Angel got its name, and see the site of two of its most famous coaching inns
- Find out how the local Victorian Bobby on the beat marked his territory
- Learn about the working-class history of the area and see what remains of its industrial past
- Get to grips with the meaning behind the song ”Pop goes the weasel”
- Learn about the area’s links with London’s violent gangs, both past and present
- Visit the peaceful site of one of London’s oldest burial grounds and hear about some of the inspirational people buried there
By the end of this 90-minute walk, you’ll have a sense of how this area developed from fields and open countryside to a buzzing hub of commerce and entertainment.
Tour Producer
Steve Matthews
I’ve been guiding in London since 2010, and in that time I’ve led thousands of people through the backstreets, river paths, and half‑forgotten corners that rarely make it into the guidebooks. My work is rooted in years of on‑the‑ground experience, a lot of digging through old maps and archives, and a genuine fascination with how London’s past still shapes the city we walk through today.
What began as a hobby has grown into a long‑standing practice of researching local history — from lost streets and vanished industries to the characters who left their mark on the place. I keep my tours updated with new findings, fresh angles, and the odd surprising detail that brings a street or story to life.
I specialise in the parts of London people often overlook, helping visitors and locals alike see the echoes and footprints hidden in plain sight. My aim is simple: to share the stories I’ve gathered over the years with accuracy, enthusiasm, and a real affection for this endlessly surprising city. Whether you’re joining me for the first time or returning for another walk, you can expect a well‑researched, engaging, and reliable tour shaped by more than a decade of experience.

Tips
Places to stop along the way
Two places that you may like to pause at during the tour are Myddleton Square, a rather nice leafy park and Bunhill Fields burial ground. Wesley's house, chapel and museum are open to the public but there is an entry fee. There are many food outlets around the Angel station, but not so many in the middle part of the tour. The area around Old Street is rather vibrant with many coffee shops and food outlets. Moorgate where the tour finishes has many well known brands serving fast food. I would reccomend stopping off at the Eagle or the Artillery Arms public houses but check opening times. Two good value restaurants towards the end of the tour are Giovanni's at 12 City Road and Mu Mu Street Food at 19 City Road.
Best time of day
Anytime between dawn to dusk, however the area is a busy commuter hub and will get crowded between 7:30-9:00 am and again between 4:30-6:00 pm. I would reccomend starting the tour around 10:00 am when things are a little less hectic. Weekends will be quieter.
Please note that Bun Hill Fields burial grounds has the following opening times
Monday to Friday
8am to 7pm
Weekends and Bank holidays
9.30am to 7pm
The Chapel, Museum and John Wesley’s House opening times are every Tuesday - Saturday, 10.30am - 4pm
Precautions
The area is usually very busy with lots of people on the streets, but please take the usual precautions regarding your bags, cameras and mobile phones.
