About the Tour

It's no coincidence that the first motorcar journey on UK soil took place just a year after London’s Great Horse Manure Crisis of 1894. On this walking tour through the elegant streets of Mayfair and St James, you’ll hear how London evolved from a city whose streets were piled high with horse manure, to the home of numerous motorcar pioneers.

Starting in Grosvenor Square, you’ll hear the back story behind the city’s manure crisis. This motoring-themed tour then steers you into the heart of picturesque Mayfair where Charles Rolls, of Rolls-Royce fame, was born. You’ll then cruise past the oldest Bentley dealership in the world, Jack Barclay Bentley, and the oldest pub in Mayfair, Coach & Horses. The pub is only a stone’s throw from London’s first recorded drunk driving incident. I’ll share the story with you while you make your way to St James, where our tour ends near the Royal Automobile Club.

As a City of Westminster Tour Guide, I know this part of town like the back of my hand, and as well as iconic sights, I’ll be showing you some of the hidden gems that many people miss. Instead of dry facts and figures, you can expect to hear the riveting stories behind the extraordinary, and sometimes eccentric, individuals who contributed to the growing popularity of the motor car in the early part of the 1900s.

On this London tour, you’ll also hear about:

  • A group of wealthy playboys known as the Bentley Boys and who were described as great drivers and even better dancers
  • The Steering Wheel Club, where famous racing drivers and world champions used to meet to let their hair down
  • Jack Barclay, the finest luxury car salesman in the trade
  • A race across France between a Bentley and a steam train
  • Why David Blakeley, an up-and-coming racing driver, was shot dead by the last woman to be hanged in Britain
  • The car that took King Edward VIII to Windsor Castle to announce his abdication

You don’t have to be a car enthusiast to enjoy this 90-minute stroll, which also gives you an opportunity to soak up the atmosphere in some of the most picturesque and sophisticated parts of central London. Whether you’re a visitor to London or one of the locals, this is a perfect way to discover this great city from a different perspective, and be entertained and amused along the way.

Tour Producer

I’m Ian Grover and for many years it’s been my pleasure to guide visitors around London and throughout the British Isles. As well as the iconic sights, I delight in showing the hidden gems that many people miss.

My background was centred around the automotive industry when in 1980 I started work as a trainee car salesman with Renault UK Ltd. Over the coming years I progressed to sales management with Mercedes-Benz and finally ended up with the splendidly sounding title of Personal Liaison Manager, responsible for UK sales of their two flagship models. These were the ultra-luxurious Maybach, and a 300 km/h supercar called the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. When these two programmes came to an end I decided to take a different path in life and do something that I had always had a passion for and I became a tour guide.

I went to the University of Westminster in London where, after comprehensive training, I qualified with distinction as a City of Westminster Tour Guide, Since then, over the past years I have delivered both walking tours of London and driving tours throughout the British Isles and this is something that I still enjoy immensely.

In addition to my physical tours, through my Talk the Walk profile on VoiceMap, I'm now focussed on producing engaging audio tours so that travellers can explore with me in their own time and at their own pace.

The door now leads to upstairs offices , but from the 1960s to the late 80s this was the entrance to the Steering Wheel Club. This was a favourite p...

Tips

Places to stop along the way

There are plenty of cafes, coffee shops and pubs on our route if you wish to stop for a while to take some refreshment. We finish very close to Trafalgar Square which is home to both the National Gallery and National Portrait Gallery. It's also close to very vibrant parts of London such as Covent Garden and Leicester Square. The Houses of Parliament, Big Ben and Westminster Abbey are also just a short walk away.

Best time of day

This tour can take place any day of the year. The best time to start is between 08:00 and 17:00 while Grosvenor Square is open to the public.

Precautions

The tour takes you through a very safe and relatively uncrowded part of London. For visitors from other countries please remember that we drive on the left side of the road which may be the opposite to the system you are familiar with. Take extra care when crossing roads and make sure you look both ways before crossing. Keep a look out for cyclists as some don't always strictly follow the rules of the road and they may appear from a direction that you are not expecting.
