About the Tour

Marylebone is defined by its spectacular garden squares, each with its own character and history. On this walking tour of the elegant London district, you’ll explore the graceful Georgian and Regency architecture that frames these green havens. You’ll also hear fascinating stories about the aristocrats and artists who’ve called these squares home over the centuries.

The tour starts at the Victorian-era Coach Makers’ Arms Pub on Marylebone Lane. You’ll stroll through Manchester Square with its grand mansions, and into Portman Square with its generous gardens. Along the way, you’ll learn how these squares were developed as speculative ventures by wealthy landowners like William Portman, transforming what was once a rural village into one of London’s most desirable residential areas.

You’ll come across embassies, historic churches, and the iconic locations where cultural giants once lived – from W. Somerset Maugham’s townhouse to the basement flat where John Lennon and Yoko Ono created their controversial album cover. The tour ends at Marylebone Railway Station, the newest of London’s major terminals. There, you can admire the elegant Edwardian architecture that once welcomed travelers directly into the grand Landmark London Hotel, with its stunning stained glass window and grand marble staircase.

On this 90-minute walking tour, you’ll have a chance to:

  • Find out how garden squares became the defining feature of Georgian London’s urban planning and social hierarchy
  • Admire Hertford House, home to the world-renowned Wallace Collection of fine art
  • Explore Portman Square’s elegant Georgian architecture and discover the 1887 Hamilton Memorial Drinking Fountain
  • Learn how Montagu Square attracted famous residents, including author Anthony Trollope, poet Ted Hughes, and The Beatles
  • Examine the contrasting architectural styles of the Swedish and Swiss embassies
  • Discover Bryanston Court, where Wallis Simpson conducted her scandalous affair with the future Edward VIII
  • Appreciate the magnificent vista of St. Mary’s Church from Wyndham Place
  • Walk past the townhouse where Somerset Maugham lived while writing his exotic tales of Asia

Whether you’re a history buff, architecture enthusiast, or simply looking for a deeper understanding of London’s elegant West End, this tour offers a fascinating glimpse into the past and present of Marylebone’s garden squares.
