Tijdens deze wandeling leer je hoe Greenwich Mean Time (of GMT) de standaard is geworden van waaruit alle tijden van de wereld worden uitgewerkt. Je zult horen over de moord op een aartsbisschop door de Vikingen in de 9e eeuw en ontdek de eikeboom van koningin Elizabeth, waar Henry VIII ravotte met Anne Boleyn, wat resulteerde in de geboorte van de iconische koningin van Engeland. Stop hier, bij de leuningen die over de rivier uitkijken. Je kijkt naar het beroemde uitzicht op het Royal Naval Hospital, de grote witte structuur met dubbele koepels. Dit uitzicht werd in 1750 door Canaletto geschilderd. Het schilderij zelf bevindt zich in de collectie van h... Stop hier, bij de leuningen die over de rivier uitkijken. Je kijkt naar het beroemde uitzicht op het Royal Naval Hospital, de grote witte structuur met dubbele koepels. Dit uitzicht werd in 1750 door Canaletto geschilderd. Het schilderij zelf bevindt zich in de collectie van het National Maritime Museum.

Greenwich is sinds de Viking invasies in de donkere Middeleeuwen in verband gebracht met de zee. Bij één inval veroverden de indringers de aartsbisschop van Canterbury, Alfege, en vermoordden hem. Hij wordt herdacht door St Alfege Church, gebouwd door Nicholas Hawksmoor in de barokstijl. Je zult de torenspits van deze kerk binnenkort zien, wanneer je de rivier naar Greenwich bent overgestoken.

Later genoten veel vorsten van het verblijf in het middeleeuwse paleis van Placentia, dat ooit heeft gestaan waar het Royal Naval Hospital nu is. Deze omvatten Henry VIII en zijn dochter Elizabeth I. Het was ook daar dat de doodswaarborgen van twee koninginnen werden ondertekend, die van Anne Boleyn en Mary Queen of Scots. Het paleis van Placentia was in de zeventiende eeuw in verval geraakt en werd uiteindelijk in de jaren 1660 door Charles II afgebroken. Er is niets meer over van het oude paleis, omdat het volledig werd vervangen door het barokke complex dat je vandaag ziet.

Nu gaan we door de tunnel onder de Theems naar de andere kant lopen. Kijk een beetje naar rechts van het Royal Naval Hospital. Zie je de koepelvormige structuur die er precies zo uitziet als degene achter je? Dat is waar we uit de tunnel zullen komen.

Loop nu terug naar de koepelvormige ingang van de voetgangertunnel en daal af via de lift. Je kunt ook de wenteltrap aflopen maar het is ver naar beneden. Wanneer je de bodem bereikt, loop je onder de Thames naar Greenwich. Dit duurt maximaal 5 minuten en je hoort onderweg niets van me.
