Łódź’s Ruin and Rise: From Poznański’s Palace to Liberty Square
About the Tour
Poland’s most dramatic story of urban transformation unfolds on Łódź’s streets. On this walking tour, you’ll get to know the city that exploded from a rural backwater to an industrial powerhouse in less than a century.
The tour starts at the PURO Hotel Łódź Centrum. I’ll lead you through the layered history of a city that defies easy categorization: neither ancient nor traditionally Polish, yet utterly essential to understanding modern Europe. You’ll see everything from the restored grandeur of a textile magnate’s palace to the tragic site of Europe’s second-largest Jewish ghetto, and get a sense of how Łódź became a “bubbling cauldron” of ambition, suffering, and relentless reinvention.
You’ll find out how visionary entrepreneurs like Israel Poznański built empires that made Łódź wealthier than entire regions, only to see it all collapse and rise again. Along the way, you’ll hear stories of the Lost Quarter’s bustling markets which vanished during the Holocaust. The tour ends at Plac Wolności (Liberty Square), recently resurrected as the city’s beating heart.
Along the way, you’ll have a chance to:
- Enter the gates of Poznański’s textile empire, where 4,000 workers once labored 15-hour days, now transformed into Manufaktura, Poland’s largest regeneration project since Warsaw’s reconstruction
- Stand in Israel Poznański’s palace garden, called the “Louvre of Łódź,” and learn how a Jewish entrepreneur became one of Poland’s wealthiest men
- Walk through Park Staromiejski, built over the former Łódź Ghetto’s no-man’s land
- Discover the site of the medieval Old Town Market Square, where 200,000 Jews faced a horrific fate in World War II
- Follow part of the hidden Łódka River, one of 18 rivers that powered the textile mills which transformed Poland’s industrial landscape
- See Roa’s famous Weasels Stealing Eggs mural, part of the street art explosion that’s helping Łódź embrace its gritty urban reality while creating beauty
- Learn about Cyprian Kosiński, the Łódź-born chemist who convinced international investors to commit €250 million to transform industrial ruins into cultural spaces
On this 90-minute tour, you’ll meet a city where explosive growth, devastating tragedy, and remarkable resilience created Poland’s most unique urban story – and a place still ”impatient for the world to notice.”

James Cowan
Having led professional walking tours in person in Cardiff, Wales, for many years through my own business called "Cardiff History and Hauntings" I have turned my passion for history and storytelling into creating audiotours in cities which lie close to my heart, to share this passion ever more widely!
I grew up with Cardiff on my doorstep and lived there for many years of my adult life. Discovering its incredible but still largely unknown history became an ever-growing passion which led me to develop walking tours telling stories of the history, legends and ghost stories of Cardiff and Wales – tales of Kings, Princes, traitors and a one-time tiny town on the Taff that overnight become the world’s biggest coal port, from which emerged the grand domes, towers and columns of its beautiful civic centre….while all the time, in its woodlands and castles, ancient legends and tales of ghosts still lurked! The success of this enterprise led to me being invited to script and present two TV series for local television, as well as guest appearances on TV and radio programmes all over the world.
I am delighted that, thanks to VoiceMap, I have been able to convert some of these tours into self-guided audio tours.
Since 2019 I have had a new home, Copenhagen, and I have fallen in love with this city. My thirst for historical research and uncovering "tales of the city" found a new focus here and, in 2021, I was delighted to offer my first Copenhagen audio tour, as a prelude to others which followed in 2022 and 2025, with a further tour to follow in 2026!
In 2023 I was very excited to introduce my first ever audio tour in Poland, of Warsaw’s beautiful Old Town. I have been fascinated and deeply moved by Polish history since childhood, and as an adult I have been spellbound by the beauty of its cities, and awe struck by the resilience and determination of the Polish character, despite everything the country has experienced.
My Polish partner has further wedded me to a love of this country and in 2025 I published a series of audio tours of Łódź! I hope that my tours of Łódź shed new light on this striking, exciting, and much underrated city! Moreover, I hope that my audiotour of the site of the Łódź Ghetto serves as a powerful informational and educational tool, shedding light on the city's darkest chapter. Indeed, I hope all my Polish audio tours convey my admiration and respect for the country's history and culture.
So, that is why I am thrilled to be a VoiceMap publisher. I offer you meticulously researched tours, spoken with true passion!

Directions to Starting Point
The tour begins outside the entrance to the large modern Puro Hotel, Ogrodowa 16, Łódź, and opposite the Poznański Palace.
From the main tram station (called by locals The Unicorn’s Stable):
You can take trams numbered 2, 3, 6, 7, or 11 which leave from the platform nearest to the Hampton by Hilton. You must have a ticket before you enter and you can buy a ticket from the machine (with English instructions) in the station.
Remember to time stamp your ticket as soon as you board by inserting it into the orange or yellow box inside the tram. Take the tram 6 stops (about 10 minutes journey) and get off at the stop called "Manufaktura" which you will hear announced, and you will see on the left the giant sign for the complex. Walk back to the main corner where it is easy to spot the Puro hotel.
Tips
Places to stop along the way
There are many places in the Manufaktura centre where you can either sit in and have something to eat or drink or you can pick up refreshments to take with you on the rest of the tour.
Manufaktura, Park Staromiejski, the Old Town Square, and Plac Wolności all have places where you can sit and take in the atmosphere.
Best time of day
This tour is best done during the day at any time. Although the route is safe, it is not recommended to do the tour at night as it involves walking through parkland which can be less busy at night and might leave you feeling vulnerable.
Precautions
The route is safe and there are usually always other passers-by close by. Take normal precautions by listening to instructions about crossing roads, and observing light controlled crossings, and looking after your possessions. Please note that parts of the tour occasionally involve going up a small number of steps, and also at one point, going down a gravel sloping path.
